For 25 years, I used a stud finder which I was very happy with. It was accurate, simple, no false negatives, rare false positives, and it was silent. Well, it finally gave out; the brand doesn’t exist anymore, so I bought a series of new ones, all of which I have returned.
The most common brand around here is Zircon, and I have found several of their different models similarly worthless. They yield high numbers of both false positives and false negatives, they are confusing to use, and worst of all they squeal. I hate squealing noises. I’m not blind; all I want is a light. And I want something that just detects studs and joists, not a half a dozen other things.
Can someone direct me to such a device? Googling it results in several other brands, but I can’t tell much from the blurbs.

I have 2 Zircons and the rarely get used. Have the best luck with a rare-earth magnet and knuckles. Believe I got the magnet from lee valley.
I'm having the same problem. I don't like any of the newer ones I've tried, they have 'improved' them too much.
If you find one you like, let me know.
Wife seems able to find me with little trouble. Mebbe give her a call?
