Need some advice. Hoping to build 1800 sq ft home in south central Colorado. Elevation: 8000′. Can’t seem to find SIP panel prices. Instead of SIP, would going to 2×8 stud walls on 24″ centers be comparable? Is 7/16 OSB sheathing adequate on 24″ centers. Batt & Board exterior finish. I would use a 6 mil vapor barrier as well. Standard 8′ ceiling throughout. 4/12 roof pitch (truss). What’s the best way to get R-50 in a truss roof? I’m a 70 year old DIY’er who wants to go back to the mountains. Dumb idea?

Take a look at this thread and even do a search here for Mooney Wall.

Why are you having so much trouble getting SIP prices. I had several companies that would give raw panel prices right of their website. Contact an r-control distributor out there. They should be able to get you any info you need. I just built my first SIP house and have been vary happy with the product so far.

They have a plant by SLC, I don't know if they're in CO.
You need an "energy heel" on your trusses so you can blow it full of cells..

Instead of 2 x 8 with insulation between the studs, I'd consider 2 x 6 with insulation between the studs and an inch of foam board over the studs (under the drywall). The foam will form a thermal break over the studs. I don't have official proof, but my strong guess would be the overall heat loss of the wall would be less the way I describe than with 2 x 8 walls.
For roof trusses you want "raised heel trusses". A raised heel raises the rafters above the bottom chord of the truss so that you can run the attic insulation all the way to the outer edge of the wall. In my home I used a 15" heel, which allowed for 12" of insulation and a 3" air space.
There should be illustrations of raised heel trusses somewhere on the Web.
Only since you asked I'll give my opinion. A simple lifestyle can be refreshing, but at your age isolation can take it's toll. Not just socially, but things like shopping become more difficult and that drives many older folks into a shell that can become painful in the late 80's and 90's.
look into sip's but I read in I believe the fine homebuilding magazine of someone framing with a 2by6 top and bottom plate but using 2by4 studs two foot on center. one set of studs on the outside and the other on the inside one foot apart. This way the insulation can "weave" between the studs and eliminate thermalbridging. Just a thought. You will find a lot of helpful information here and if no one answers your question just post it again good luck sir.
