I am a restoration carpenter who specializes in antique timber framing. I am familiar with English and Dutch styles of framing. What I am curious about is how many other styles of traditional framing are there in North America? What are they like?

There is an excellent book on barn architecture floating around somewhere. I let it slip through my hands before I realized my error. Does anyone know of which I speak?
*Look for the work of Eric Sloan.

Good call, Bob! I have a few of Eric Sloane's books:
b Diary of An Early American Boy,
b A Reverence for Wood,
b A Museum of Early American Tools,
and
b I Remember America
The last one listed is the best one I have for info on barns. He is the artist, also, and the book is full of sketches and paintings. There is a list of 20-some other books he's written, including
b American Barns and Covered Bridges,
and
b An Age of Barns
Jim, I hope you can find some of his work!
