We will be installing hardwood flooring over an old Tongue and Groove plank subfloor. We are thinking of putting 1/4 pywood over the sub floor and then install the flooring. My question is kind of two fold. Should we use Rosin paper between the plywood and subfloor? Is 1/4 plywood ok to use over the subloor or do we need something thicker? The subfloor is for the most part in good condition.
The hardwood is an engineered product, nail down (or staples) and 3 1/2″ wide.

If the sub floor is 1.5" thick, then any underlayment plywood is fine I think. I added 5mm ply to a house I did, just to get a smoother surface. I glued it and stapled it down. The paper usually goes under the flooring in my experience.
David,
To help eliminate later squeaks from your subfloor I would screw it down prior to installing your flooring. The underlayment is probably unnecessary. If you do use it, staple the heck out of it. Use the fastening guide like you would be laying vinyl tile or sheet goods over it.
Paper goes under your hardwood.
I don’t know what was meant about an inch and a half subfloor.
