I will be laying 3/4 ” 5″ wood flooring – current subloor is 1×5 ponderosa pine laid perpendicular to the joist 16″oc,3/8″ particleboard underlayment and vinyl on top. I am planning to lay the floor on top of the existing after getting the floor flat. I am concerned that the room layout( long and skinny) would look best with the new flooring parallel with the subfloor and perpendicular to the joists. Will nailing the floor ,basically into 1 row of subfloor be a problem ? plan B- tear out vinyl and particlebaord and install 1/2 ply.
Any thought

The problem might be going into the worthless holding power of the particle board.
I'd take it up, screw down the subfloor to the joists and then perhaps glue and screw plywood to the sub (staggering the joints in the ply to the boards if at all possible. (stagger the sheets of ply also.
Felt or rosin paper, then hardwood (unless you plan to glue the wide hardwood as well as nail.
You will have nothing but trouble if you don't get rid of thre particle board first
