Finishing up my kitchen remodel. I want to avoid running the new floor parallel to the current floor in other rooms because it is a very different flooring. My subfloor is pine 1×8 planks with 1/4 gaps run on a diagonal over 16 oc joists.
Any chance I can run new 3/4 flooring (prefinished walnut) parallel to the joists?
Would swapping the pine subfloor for 3/4 ply allow me to run parallel to the joists?
At the very least, could I run the flooring perpendicular to the diagonal subfloor?
Thanks in advance…

I believe that's the reason they ran the subfloor boards on the diagonal so you have a choice of which way to run the finished flooring. If your subfloor is in reasonably good shape, I don't see why you couldn't.
The condition of you subfloor has far more to do with your flooring installation than which way the joists are running.
If the budget allows, I would opt to pull the old subfloor and install the 3/4 plywood.
If the 1X is in excellent condition, nail or screw it off well and install your flooring in any direction you desire.

I have read here on these pages that one should always run flooring perpendicular to the joists. Makes lots of sense, I am just wondering if that holds true with diagonal subflooring.
