Suspending a deck beam from the ledger?

MrBlister | Posted in Construction Techniques on October 13, 2007 03:45am

I need to hang a doubled 2X10 beam from a ledger on a deck project I’m doing.  The ledger will be 2X8, and attached to the sills of the house, and the joisting will be 2X8’s on 16†centers.  The beam will be spanning 20 feet and be carried by concrete piers to above grade, (2 piers for this span, plus bearing from the hanger on the ledger,) and then have saddles and 6X6 posts, all in PT. I don’t want to put a pier near the foundation wall and muck up the weepers.  My first choice would be to suspend a double joist hanger from the ledger as a hanger for the beam. The deck is +- 32″ above grade. I’m sure it’s out there, but can’t find one with long enough straps yet.  Can anybody steer me to a source?  I’m on Southern Georgian Bay in Ontario.

Cheers,

The Simpson THA222-2 has 22" straps. However it needs to be bent over the top of the ledger a minimum of 2 1/2". Here is a link. Please note minimum nailing requirements and type of nails specified. You may be able to modify your ledger to achieve the 2 1/2" that is required (Double the ledger width).

I would not do what you're planning on to do. Okay, I would if an engineer gave the okay AND I was comfortable with the detail specified as well.

I'm not sure why you have to have a beam parallel with the joists but I'm assuming it's in there because you have a significant load to carry. And therein lies the problem.

Achieving a ledger connection that is suitable for the point loads that you're going to see (probably 6-15x a normal joist hanger load) will be very questionable.

Finally, I don't know what "weepers" are, but I would put a post in so your beam has a cantilever of no more than two feet. Deal with the weepers as best as you can.

What Jon said. And make sure to space that ledger away from the building if it's outdoors - give water a chance to escape instead of trapping it in the joint between ledger and building.Loren Wallace for president.

        Ahoy Jim,

Thanks for the heads up.  I plan to install a piece of 5/4 PT every 2' on the sill.  where it gets lagged. It probably wouldn't hurt to wrap the end grain of the PT with some "Ice Shield" as well.

        Cheers,

The deck will be on a inside corner of the house.  The beam will be parallel to one wall thus I have to attach the end of the beam where it meets the other wall.  The "weepers" are the perimeter tile  drainage .  The concrete foundation contractor had backfilled against the walls with the native soil (clay,) which I really don't want to get into.

It seems there are hangers big enough available from Strongtie for this.

      Thanks

Agreed that hanging a beam off the ledger is a bad idea. Talk to an engineer.

If you do bolt to the foundation, check out Farifax County, Virginia's website for some great info on bolting ledgers to foundations. It's not an exact match to your problem, but key is that you may not use lead anchors. Use either steel expansion bolts or adhesive anchors.Andy

first thing - your beam does not span twenty feet. It is twenty feet log. The span is the distance between bearing points. If those are equally spaced, it is ten foot spans.

The connection you plan is a terrible idea. If this is down at foundation level, use a hanger to the foundation wall with Caliburn or tapcon screws.

Then move the near pier to be close to the house as you are comfortable with relaative to theperimeter drain ( weepers?). try for 2-3 feet. Since this increases span, go to three instead of two for beam size

If you can carry your beam with a hanger bolted directly to  the foundation you should do so. Or you could bolt a section of PT 2 x 10 to the foundation and use a regular face mount hanger.
