I would like to know if anyone is familiar with a garage door that folds out vertically towards the outside of the garage?

I think that you are talking about a one piece tilt-up door.

The one on the right. Now it shows most of the door going into the garage with only a small part sticking out.
But I believe that there are other version with most of the door outside the garage in the up position.
Not too common any more.

I just replaced two old ones with new sectional. Sectional is much nicer, tighter seal at the bottom, quieter, lighter, more modern, etc.......................
