i’ve recently started using “tuff board” carried by Home Depot. it is a 1x pvc product pre-primed for trim.
what do you all think of this. inside? outside? trim around rim of deck?
couldn’t find anything specifically about this in the posts.
thanks everyone

Haven't used the HD brand yet but I expect most pvc trim to be alike. Use PVC cememnt at the joints (not the purple primer!), watch shooting nail close to the edge as it is brittle and a chunk will break off. Design long runs so that the ends are slip joints (leave the hidden board shy so the butting board covers in inside corners and cope joints) to allow for expansion. Expensive but generally worth the cost.
thanks for the tips!can't i use regular wood glue?
PVA and aliphatics glues (carpenter's wood glue) won't hold. Polyurethane (like Gorilla Glue) will work well but expect oozing and foaming as it cures (read the label and keep a water mister handy). The advantage I find with PVC cement, if PVC trim, is the speed that it sets up. I can tack up a run to say an outside miter leaving the end loose, do the same with the mating board. I apply the cement at the miter and hold the joint perfect, 30 seconds and done. Then I can nail off the rest of the boards without buggering my joint, little clean up with a file, a touch of caulk and it looks sweet. Same with scarf joints. Try it, after one or two I bet you feel the same, especially if you need small returns, window aprons and crown say. For window casings I usually measure carefully, cut everything and assemle on the ground. Here I add pocket screws at the joint, a simple jig & bit runs less than $30 and you'll find more uses for it believe me, carry the trim to the window and install.
Look into it some more. Is it 100% pvc like koma, azek, etc or is it one of the trim boards that have pvc and wood mixed. Gary Katz had an article in FHB last year about all the different type, advantages/disadvantages, etc.
interestingly enough.....nobody at the 3 home depot stores i called new anything about it, nor have i found anything about it on the web. they say its call "tuff board" that's all i get though it seems very sawdust like to me. they had a brochure near the display, turns out that was for "veranda" productsi just don't know. though i like working with it...seems sort of like mdf.
"nobody at the 3 home depot stores i called new anything about it"
If I was not sitting down, I may have been hurt. I am shocked people at home depot didn't know anything. LOL. If you stop by there, someone at the "contractors desk" might know but even that is iffy.
I checked the FHB article (issue 165, pg. 52) from last year on the man made exterior trim. There are synthetics made from pvc and wood fibers. The two brands mentioned are http://www.royalwood.com and http://www.certainteed.com I'm sure there are more, that material is probably what HD is selling. It might be one of these two or another company with HD labeling it with that name.
In the article, it says that there are similar expansion/contractor issues to deal with as with pvc's like azek and something about using the right type of caulking for that specific material.
thanks for the help!lol....all day long. but you'd think they'd at least know the name of the product. oops, there i go again! gotta stop be hopeful.
