Hi all. Apologies for the post,, and yes I didn’t do a forum search,, I have problems with finding the info.
I’m already into my third season with my tankless,, it works just fine thank you very much,, I think I’m going to install a super small electric unit under the kitchen sink which is the longest run, to prevent needless water wastage,,, but I digress.
It occurrs to me to get my butt off the computer and de-scale this puppy. The kit is available for $165 cnd.

Wonder if the pump is really worth that much. and a few fittings. I scads of the tubing.
Thoughts? Thanks!

can I self bump? Any one have opinions on de-scaling? They say it should be done yearly! So this thread has relevence to anyone with a tankless.
Thanks ,, dave
I have the kit and have used it. Works well. I am told that a solution on vinagar works well also.
That said, our heater lets us know when it needs to be done with an error code on the remote control. We have not done it for the three years since we put in a water softner.
Are you on city water?
No, well water and very hard.
Seems like you could cobble something together using a small pump (tile saw? sump?) and some common plumbing fittings. Believe me, they do not manufacture the pump sold with that kit specifically for that purpose, it is generally for another use and does not cost $165. My plumber made a little rig for descaling tankless heaters using a salvaged pump and some clear tubing, all it needs to do is move a few GPM thru the machine.
I agree, I think an aquarium pump would work well( sized right).
I wonder how many gpm?
I'm definately gonna cobble one up. More fun than buying the kit anyways!

Might talk to the WH manufacturer and see what they recommend.
I see now, the depot has several candidates for the pump,, 70-80 buck range. wonder about using the dehumidifyer descaler for my instant hot water heater descaleing.
vinegar??
I use a regular Sump pump, same as I use for pumping out footings, run a gallon of white vinegar out of it through the DHW for a half hour or so generally using the pop-off valve to dump it into a five gallon bucket and pumping back out of the bucket into the DHW with the gas turned off.
Rinse the pump well before and after use of course.

That's what I've heard... a couple gallons of white vingar in a 5-gal bucket, let it cycle thru for a couple of hours.
