I have had a standard electric 40 gallon water heater in my house for almost 19 years with no problems. My water is softened and I think that that has helped it last so long. I also added a 2″ extra insulating blanket to the heater from the time that it was new.
I know that the heater can’t have much life left in it and I am considering replacing it with a tankless gas water heater. I now have natural gas in the house which I did not when the existing water heater was installed.
I see lots of data on energy savings comparing tankless gas water heaters with standard electric water heaters. Does anyone know what the comparison would be between tankless gas and a standard electric that has an extra insulating blanket?
There sure is a big difference in purchase price and I can install my own electric hot water heater easily whereas I can’t install a gas appliance.
I have always felt like my electric bills for water heating were not too bad (there are only two of us in the house). I am not sure that energy savings will justify the cost of installing a tankless gas water heater.
Has anyone had any experience with this?

We've had so many fights over this subject, some of us aren't speaking to others. But its all there!
First thing is that you need to find out what your per unit electric and gas rates are.
They do vary. Specially electric rates are all over the map. And some utilities have special off peak and other rates. In my case during the 8 non-summer months after a certain amount the cost drops almost in 1/2. During the summer months it increases slightly.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
