It’s December in NC and I’m adding to a dormer and reducing the roof pitch to about 4/12. I’ve read that nailing the shingles down at this time of year is not a good idea, as they won’t seal properly. I’m also in a relatively high wind area.
I would appreciate advice on how best to seal the roof decking until spring. Suggestions include gluing down 30 lb felt, using something like GAF Weather Watch, Owens Corning WeatherLock, or WR Grace’s product. Alternately, if we get the occasional ‘t-shirt’ day, what temperature (and for how long) could I consider it safe to apply shingles? The area is about 2 square and faces due south.
Finally, I will have to deal with the valley and in the currently cold weather (30’s) I’m concerned about breaking the shingles on the adjacent roof.
Any thoughts and experience will be appreciated.

Unless they are cheap thin 3 tabs, which sounds like they aren't , go for it just about anytime. I have done plenty of roofs in NC mtns in dead of winter, and they are all still staying just fine.

we have shinged for years with no ill effects in upstate NY, tad bit colder here than where you live.
Go on and shingle it. Use 6 nails per shingle to keep 'em down until they get some sun them. We shingle all year in KY and I've never had a problem with sealing unless it's GAF shingles and that might not be a problem for you if they come out of a different factory.

I always need help. However, I'm in Asheville and it's only a couple of square. It's really the valley that I'm concerned about and tying into the old (10 yrs) shingles in cold weather and the possibility of breaking them. They're architectural shingles and double thick up in places. I'm sure that, like most jobs, it'll just be a matter of getting to work and working through the problems.Thanks,

I HAD lived in Jackson Co. NC, just over the Balsam Gap from where are, and loved it. It sure is getting crowded down there tho'.
