I’ve got T&G siding that is so old that there are cracks big enough for water to easily flow through, but not big enough to see a lot of daylight. There is a lot of draft of course and I want to insulate it for a shop. I think the only thing to do would be to seal the inside with Thompson’s water seal and then put roofing paper in between the studs. This wouldn’t keep the water from coming in but it would keep it from damping the insulation. I also have to paint it, but am reluctant to caulk the joints. That will only peel out in time. Any ideas?

Can you stud up a new room inside the barn and insulate that instead? Just leave some airspace between the new and the old so air can circulate around it to minimize dampness and rot in the barn structure.
This would be a high cost solution but good one - spray urethane foam to the inside.
I'm not sure what the Thompsons would do for you on the inside. It is a wax based sealer.
