I’m planning on replacing the T&G painted fir porch on the front on my 1892 colonial. I gather that I should stick with the T&G since it is a front porch but I’d like to take it up a notch. I was thinking of using T&G Mahogony and pictureframing it with a 1×6 IPE border, bullnosed. I just want to oil it so I’m concerned with water infiltration in the cracks. Should I just oil each side before installing or should I coat the tongues and grooves with a wax product like Anchorseal?
thanks,
Mike

IMO, having it pitched properly is much more important than any finish you put on it. There should be at least 1" of pitch per 10' of run, and it is best if your deck boards run perpendicular to the house (down the pitch), to shed water. The mahog and ipe sounds nice but if you're painting it ... why not save the $$ and use fir all around?
Hi, Thanks for the reply. I'm replicating the original pitch, and running the boards with it. I'm just going to use rosewood oil to finish, I wasn't planning on painting.

you should seal all sides first.
You should not do log cabin style. The grooves NEED to be all directing water away from the house.
Cap it and you trap it. Then you have rot sooner than later.
