The painting boss is so crazy, how can I deal with the problem?

lily88 | Posted in General Discussion on May 10, 2013 11:25am

I hired a paiting company to paint my house. I found them on the anglie list. He can start my project at the second day. However, some customers complained the boss is somehow kind of crazy. When no problem happen, everything is fine. When there is some difficult problem happen, he just yell at customer and he always said the customer yell at him. I have a little cornerns, but other painter just can start job 1 or 2 weeks later. So I chose him and think maybe I will have a good luck.

But I am unlucky too. Their quality cannot be controlled steadily. Some paiting is very ugly. And they delay the schedule. When I feel worried and ask him whether can send some one to fix the problems and ask when his team can finish the job. He just overacted. He shout at me with red face, and he said I have no power to tell me what should do , his team do job very good. About the deadline, he just tell me “when I  finish, it is finished” with a odd simle. And he said I am crazy woman and he will never said to me and he just run infront of my house and shout loadly that he will call to my husband (I was really astonished by what he said and his behavior, I doubt whether the guy have problem in his mind). I told him my husband is in very important meeting, but he just call to my husband again and agian, so that my husband have to stop his work can drive to the house. Since he shout he never want to talk with me, my husband come back and just want to make a talk with him. The more surprising thing is when my husband come back and see him, he just told my husband he is done and ask his employee take everything and leave my house. My house is in a mess, something is paited and something is not .

The odd thing happen on that night.  When we talk about how to hire another paitner to fix the left job, the crazy boss just called to my husband, and send message to my husband and me. He kept saying”he is really want to finish his job and he want to talk with us ASAP”. From the beginning, we didn’t want to reply to him. He just sent many messages to us. finally I reply him he choose to leave us like this. He just reply me he have to leave because I hassased him (kiddding me!)

Then today a woman call to us and said she is his partner and she is in charge the finance. she want to talk with us. From the begining she just said she heard the boss the employes complain us disturb their job and make them delay the job…even she mentioned I gave one of the employee some tips is not right because if I give, I should pay to the company. ( he is the only one to work in  my house for several days, and maybe work very hard, I should buy some water to him. For thanks him, I give him the tips. That become another compain to me)when I said what happen, she just say she like to take a painter to go to my house and talk with us to discuss how to fix the problems..

I am really scared by the boss.  I ask the woman whether they can make the boss don’t enter my house, she just reply when she talk to us, the boss will not come….

But the problem is I really doubtly whether iI have courage to work with them again. Make the boss out his project cannot be ture. Is that right?

If I hire another painter to give me a estimate to fix the left problem, can I just use the estimate as a evidence to subtract the the cost from the total price of the crazy boss ?

    Pardon me for being blunt.

There is really nothing anyone here can say to you that will help with this problem.

If you've read much in this forum, you should have come across tips on choosing a contractor, and that doesn't include checking angie's list.  That service may have started out as a good place to verify a contractors credentials, but it has evolved into an advertising money making gimmic.

It has been written here over and over that choosing the best help in your project isn't easy.  It requires you to spend the time studying the merits, background and track record of your help.  Direct word of mouth is in my mind one of the best sources.  Friends and associates may not know diddley about painting, carpentry, plumbing or electric............but they should be able to inform you of those they've had success dealing with.

Suppliers, building inspection depts., and sometimes realtors (if you're lucky) could add more information.

Find a good remodeling contractor and he/she will have a group of subcontractors they work with that they will supply or refer.

If you've signed a contract with the painter, you'll have to deal with that b/4 ending that relationship and beginning another.

    Best of luck.

I would suggest you get a lawyer to break the contract (and lock the painter out until that's done).  Eat whatever cost you have to.

The guy is unstable, and, frankly, you probably tick him off.  From what I can tell, you're an immigrant, with poor English skills (which in his mind means you're ignorant), and, even worse, you're a WOMAN.  Plus you're being assertive -- the worst possible thing a foreign woman could do (in his mind)!

Like I said, lock him out, get a lawyer, break the contract.  And if necessary get a restraining order to keep him away.
