Reading Slater’s thread “a copper door” in the photo section got me to thinking…if all the breaktimer’s were to build a house, who would do what? Slater will obviously get to do the copper work, and I know Pro-Dek for the deck, but who to do what other work? So…..

I voted for Piffin to design it. He's the one with Softplan. And he's the only building designer here, unless I missed something. Not only am I redundant and superfluous, but I also tend to use more words than necessary
Ya, that'll do it. You said to draw the prints...so I got a bit over technical. Best to err on the side of caution. Helps keep the fingers.
Actually, a 3-d image and a floorplan of the house would be great to see.

About two or three weeks ago I went down to the mail box to pick up the mail and discovered this 6"x8" postcard inviting me to advertise in the new Westchester Magazine special issue Home & Garden Magazine "An Elegant New Publication. I took a quick look at the card and think for a few seconds I'm thinking "hey, nice railing" and then all of a sudden it hits me. Hey that's one of my projects, that's one of my railings!

It's the railing on the right in this photo on our website. Well not quite actually. You'll notice in the photo from my website that the iron balusters look "heavier" and are spaced closer together. That because we installed the whole project and then the owner decided she would prefer a lighter airier look and we obliged. We took out the whole installation and fabricated new balusters and then reinstalled it again a few weeks later.

Heck yeah, for real. I have a concept going to prints next week where just yesterday I proposed a curved pocket door. Two actually. Found one on the web, and now I see my second one ever.
Don, send a note. I wanna price and to know if you got pocket hardware for that.
Here is the inside of the door . Made to match the cabinets.
If you have pocket door hardware in mind, I think that it could be modified to make the curve. Who makes the best pocket door hardware? What radius for your door? This one is 30"
Edited 2/11/2004 1:22:10 AM ET by don
There's a kind of curved pocket door that's used for access to the dark end of motion picture film developing machines. The door has a radius of about 18", and the slab covers 270 degrees. The side jambs are extra wide, and more than cover the 90 degree opening. To go through the door, you walk up to your side of it, and spin it around until you feel the opening. Then you get inside the door, and roll it around 180 degrees so you can get out the other side of the jamb. This arrangement is light tight at all times.

What keeps the light that follows you into the door from following thru to the other side???Mr T

I went to the model train collectors musiem last spring in Strasburg Penn. and it was fantastic . A lot of lionel, American Flyer and Ives and there American Flyer working train layout was real nice. My wife didnt understand why I wanted to stay there for hours. and still wanted to go back the next day. If your any where near there durring the rest of your life, go there it will be one of your best days on the planet.
dogboy, All aboard
Is four hours enough? I've been known to stay for days in places like that...
Here fishy fishy....
Interesting idea.
There would be some obvious choices.
Like Piffin to draw the prints. Stan Foster to do the stairs. Rich Beckman to do the roof and gutters. (Livestock optional)
I figure I'd do the trusses. I don't think there's another truss guy here regularly, and we OBVIOUSLY couldn't have a stick framed house. (-:
But what about the stuff like the trim, framing, and drywall? There are lots of folks here who do those things.
And how could you ever get this group of folks to agree on how to build it? Vented or non-vented attic? Vinyl siding? Housewrap or felt paper? Paper or plastic? Less filling or tastes great?
I think it would be hopeless.
I know I'm narrow minded. But I can afford to be - I'm right.
I do the soil and concrete end of it.

I was wondering if the bids from each sub have an item line for flat tires?<g>
IMERC may have something to that of keeping me out there scaring the rattlers off the site. Only thing, it was 8F this AM. Maybe I need to mention to them that snakes don't move too good in the cold? If you find one out there, you can use it for a hammer.

Hee, Hee, Hee. If you want to trust me to carry around all of your equipment without dropping it, be my guest. Just remember, I can whine with the best of them. I've had 38 years of practice and my 2 year old daughter is giving me a refresher course.
Where do they learn that tone of voice? I wish Bose would come up with some sort of gadget that allows you to hear the words but makes the tone into a nice soothing request.
It is available... It is called white noise generators or noise limiters...

Only 38 years practice? And only a 2 year old?
I've been watching (and avoiding) hand wavers almost that long. Wait tilll your daughter is in middle school. THEN you'll have some idea what whining is.

I can't believe all you folk forgot the most important thing-- WHO"S GONNA BUILD AND STOCK THE BAR?
I mean, we 're going to need a place to hang around to shoot the breeze on Friday afternoons.
It could be a real ( virtual) Woodshed Tavern
I'll work on it if there's no radios.
Bar????? WE're all bringing our coolers.Who Dares Wins.
I kinda figured that Taunton would want to supply the libations as a reward for all the free PR.

local tv station had a segment a few weeks ago showing a new contraption that several construction companies are using. it's like a light tower, but had like 3 cameras mounted on it, so it had 360 deg view of the construction site. something local security co was promoting, if i heard right it transmitted the live video
Geez Probozo, we haven't even broken ground yet (Hey! I wonder if Blue still has that back hoe?) and you're already talkin' to yerself...this could be a long one.

Haven't read every post, but I don't think any work has been carved out for the Prospero folks.

What do ya reckon a house like this would cost, per square foot?

If I design it my way, I can narrow that range to a more reasonable $10 to $4,995/sf

Who will be in charge of the whole house vacuum system?
Maybe the one in charge of the electric part? Don't forget an outlet in the garage, for the cars.
Well let's go get this thing started. Forget the weather. These guys are from Breaktime.
To Whom it May Concern:
We're sorry to report that the contract for this house has been awarded to an offshore firm that presented a timely quote that met all the requirements of the customer.
If you wish to respond to future RFQ's we will be pleased to keep you on our mailing list.
Who was it in charge of openhouse entertainment?
Anyone gonna remember to pull a permit?
And btw, who's the client? Or are we building a virtual spec house, in which case, Boss is the "client".

I thought I'd just live in it 'til sold, since it was my idea anyway. :)
To make up for that, I decided to put in a workshop...and I'm gonna let y'all come use it anytime you want. Basic requirements are: 1st floor - automotive/mechanical/welding shop; 2nd Floor - woodworking shop; 3rd Floor - living quarters (guest apartments) for at least ten breaktimers at a time.
One bay in the downstairs shop must be large enough to hold and hide an entire hijacked coors truck, and the bay must be refridgerated.
Have fun: what tools/toys to put in the shop?

Put in a refrigerated basement / bunker. Might have a back to back beer hiest that that needs to be covered.

Hey! Y'all keep the talk clean! TV crew will be on-site from the git-go. Tried to get monster house or whatever that show is to come film it, but did one better....gonna get Michael Moore to film the construction...figured to also bring in Jerry Springer, to mediate the interviews with the breaktimers.
Jerry Springer seems to me to be the best person to do the show, given the temperment of some of the posters here and the likelyhood of the show would degenerate into a fist fight. If it weren't for pickpockets I'd have no sex life at all.

Thanks roger, you take what ever you want. We have no formality on the underconstruction bar. Till they put in the register, self serve. And then if they're a little slow on the pay, self serve.
I don't get near enough work like that to make it fun. Maybe when I grow up.
Make sure you post a pic (sized of course) when you get done inlaying a fish or something. Be nice to see it.

Sphere, my sincerest apologies. I think I got to the bar a little ahead of everyone else... ;-)
I have software that came with my Olympus and I can resize as well as change the "quality." I dropped it to 640x480 but didn't change teh quality and that's what I got. I already had the smaller picture in the folder but I guess my mouse clicking missed the mark on the upload!
Thanks, Calvin. It is in my house. I haven't figured out how to get a fish in there yet but I'm sure I can somehow. I will post some pics when it's all done.

save some of that demo material for the new house that Breaktime's building.
Edited 3/1/2004 7:34:39 AM ET by rez'b&g
heh, heh...been saving almost all of it..DW been de-nailin steadily..stacked in the dry. Got a MAJOR change of plans..in the works...Had a "log home guru" visit saturday...advised what to do with a BIG problem area..The west wall is beyond saving..it has to come out. So I can, 1..replace the logs with some from elsewhere in the house..not likely. Or, 2..remove enough of the outer rot to frame a stickwall and side like the "new" part is getting..or 3..Add a REALLY big French door and sidelights..
I may be able to post a new pic tonite..on my thread.
