them funny/ bent concrete nails …

JeffBuck | Posted in Tools for Home Building on September 18, 2007 03:47am

trying to buy some of the concrete nails I’ve seen somewhere along the lines …

not fluted … has a regular head …

and has a slight bend near the tip.

supposed to drill hole and tap it home.

gotta know the nsame before I start asking around.

what are they called and where’d ya find them?

and do they work as good as I’m hoping?

looking at a job where I’ll have to fasten furring to block/ ceramic block wall.

thinking they’ll be faster than tapcons.

Thanks,

Jeff

    Yeah, those things work great.

    They are deformed "nails".

But since it is not a point I am not sure if they are called nails or not.

Google did not find then under Deformed concrete Nails/Achors/Pins.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.

I've never tried it, but have seen somewhere along the line a "tip" to accomplish the same thing.  Drill a 3/16-1/4" pilot hole, insert a common steel nail, then drive another alongside it.  I guess the key factor is the malleablity of the steel nails.  In a hollow block wall (vs. solid concrete), will probably have to match the pilot holes and nails very carefully to avoid cracking the block.

I've done it a few thousand times. 1/4" hole, two 16d GVC's, drive both at the same time.Takes a four foot pry bar to get 'em out, jumping on yer flat bar ain't gonna do it.SamT

click on the mechanical fasteners link, and scroll down to the impact fasteners section.  They call them spikes, but I've always called them bent nails.

Just call your yard/hardware supplier and describe them, yeah you might sound like an idiot for a moment, but you're ego will recover I promise.

    Jeff,

A hole a little bit bigger than a common nail and a piece or even two of tie wire. Tighter'n something I can't say here.
