Yup, they done it. Spray painted some gang cr@p on my beautiful artwork! Oh well, I got a free tune-up to go back and fix it. =) This time I rolled a coat of clear mirror finish two-part “anti-graffitti” epoxy over the mural. So the next time it should scrub off. The stuff’s expensive, so I just did the mural, not the whole wall. I didn’t get the yellow exact, not sure why, I thought I was using the same stuff. And I guess I didn’t spend quite as much time on the face as last time. Oh well, it’s done now.

The local news was gonna do a story on graffiti, so they came out to shoot some footage. I thought I might get some exposure. Turns out their story is about how they're gonna let the taggers do murals on the walls downtown, and that's gonna stop the graffiti. The graffiti on my mural didn't jibe with their story, so it didn't get included.

Yep. The manhole stuff wouldn't stick to vertical surfaces.

I'm so sorry that happened. Seeing that is like a physical blow. I think there are creative makers and doers, and there are destructive wreckers. You can pick them out as toddlers: the busy little one that builds the block tower, and the little shlt that kicks it down.
I think your stuff is so great, such attention to detail!
Great fix job. I think going back is harder then work done in that fresh first surge of creativity.

Cool mural! Sorry 'bout the tagging.
It reminds me of a lot of murals I saw in Palo Alto in the 80's- UFO's crashed into sides of buildings, etc. You didn't do those too, did you?

That makes me sick.

I googled Palo Alto murals and came up with the artist, Greg Brown. Here's a link to an article on his trompe l'oleil mural work.

I enjoyed the threads you did when you were painting your murals. Your trompe-l'oeils are awesome.

is that simpson stuff the anti graffitti paint?
and did I read it right ... it's a clear coat that goes on as a top coat?
we've got a big graffitti problem here in this old alley.
always looking for a good solution.
it that stuff works ... I'd coat all the neighbors garage doors that are close to me.
I have some spray remover for the truck ... works, but ya still have to scrub.
plans to get the new truck lettered with vinyl overlay ... was thinking I might have to get a clear overlay over that ... because I think my remover will eat the lettering.

yes - its a 2-part epoxy, high gloss clear, "anti-graffitti" - expensive (I think it was like $125/gallon), but it goes pretty far, because its real thin until it starts to "kick", then it gums up fast. I have no idea how effective it is, but I'll probably find out! A little lacquer thinner took the graffitti right off - and the underlying paint too. Hopefully, if it had been coated with this stuff, it wouldn't have been a problem. But supposedly you can scrub the graffitti off, without harming the epoxy."...craftsmanship is first & foremost an expression of the human spirit." - P. Korn

The bleeding heart do-gooders that are always trying to help the disadvantaged youth are promoting tagging/gaffiti as an "art form," but no artist would ever touch another artist's work! (Unless to restore it, and then they do it with the utmost respect for what's there.)
More of a cultural difference then a definition of "art form". Modern graffiti art is an outgrowth of the Hip Hop movement. Central to that culture is self expression, and competition. A
need to shine a public light on ones personal "style" or identity.
That is a direct explanation of "Tagging", which is what happened
to poor Huck's piece. To my way of thinking, this is a sad example of misguided youth
and lack of cultural values.
"To my way of thinking, this is a sad example of misguided youth and lack of cultural values."Well said...
Huck I'm honestly sorry that you got tagged.. However some of the artists who do tagging really do do creative work. most of it is rotten #### and the vandels should be arrested for poor taste and bad judgement..
Some however is really brillant stuff.
I used to work with the railroads and some of the tagged cars that came by were absolutely awesome.. Creative, brillant, work..
Here's where I'd love to be an art critic.. Each tagger would have to submit their work for my approval. Those who pass would get fabulous riches and wealth those who failed would be forced to work in vegitable fields hoeing weeds untill the next chance!
"However some of the artists who do tagging really do do creative work"
any time anyone touches property that isn't their own it's vandalism and they should be shot in the f'n head.
artists my @#$ ! If they're such good freaking "artists" rent some gallery space and sell the ####. They're vandals with spray paint.

Agree, 100%
just back from a road trip to California. Few hundred miles down the valley with all the rail sidings for the ag businesses. It's a shame to see the #### all over every freight car, terminal, building and bridge.
They not only deface the entire country, they've got to be stealing the spray paint in those quantities. Not to mention the property they trespass upon. I know that some form of grafitti has been part of the RR scene forever by the hobos, etc. but this is ridiculous. The old times it was chalk, now it's wholesale "billboards". Trucks are starting to show it too.

OK. I felt that it's my turn to chime in on the 'Graff' subject.
I agree with Jeff. It is just plain VANDALISM to paint on others' property. No qualifications, no 'art', no excuses.
I have my warehouse on a downtown alley that faces the local 'freewall' on the back of a theater, and this wall space is provided by the theater for local graffiti artists (and anyone, for that matter) to express themselves. As a result, the painting that is done on this wall runs the gamut from crude scribblings to highly detailed pieces.
This situation also leads to attraction of those who would vandalize the walls of the building in which I have my warehouse/shop, 20 feet away and on the opposite side of the alley from the 'freewall'.
I would very much like to catch those miscreants who paint/vandalize my building. This is wrong, wrong, wrong, and quite frankly they need their azzes kicked. Big time.
Here's some of the cr^p they throw up on my building, also on my work van:

That's the krap I spoke about and you're right they should be punished.
However occasionally there is some work that does reach the status of art..
If you do brillant work on the side of a box car that is just plain ugly and a blight on it's own.. well then that is real art.. and because boxcars travel all over you are showing your art to the whole country..
I guess I should just parrot with everybody here and say graffitti is bad and those who do it are bad.. I'm sure people like Van Gough were equally dispised by most.
The rare exception shouldn't be praised simply because the work they do is brillant they should be punished right allong with the rest.. herd mentality that's what this country has denigrated to..
I'm sure if you asked the president of the railroad he would disagree about whether his rail cars look better with graffiti on them. Remember that the railroad has a corporate image that includes the paint jobs and logos they put on their rolling stock, and these people came along and defaced them. I imagine they spend a LOT of money every year on repairs that they'd rather use for some other purpose. It really isn't any different than the guys who tagged kenhill3's van.
Certainly, some of these people have real talent but if they don't have permission to paint something, they're breaking the law and it's costing someone (a company, an individual, a city government) money. Living in the inner city, I've had my garage and house tagged several times, and it's infuriating - it wasted my time and took money out of my pocket to fix. It doesn't matter if the graffiti is just scribbles or if it's a masterpiece...if Van Gogh came back to life and painted a portrait on my garage door, I'd still be mad if he did it without my permission.
If Van Gogh painted a portrait on my shop door, I might be tempted to leave it there! :o)
The majority of the people who tag/vandalize on my building are young people who don't know any better (stupid), or those with very limited artistic talent who want to be seen (like dogs marking their territory). They paint quickly and when people are unlikely to see them breaking the law.
Gang activity is almost non-existent here.
The constant problem I have with ALL the painters who come here is that they don't clean up their garbage very well, paint cans and tops mostly.
ON THE OTHER HAND.................
I have met and know many of the folks who come to my alley to paint serious art (loose definition) on the sanctioned free wall. These people are generally polite and respectful of private property. They usually consider themselves above the kind of cr^p that was sprayed on my walls and van. Some are very, very talented. The first picture shows the thickness of the spray paint built up over the years, about 5/8" - 3/4".

There have been programs here in Minneapolis to put up legitimate murals and art on walls that otherwise collected gang and tag graffiti, and it does seem to help. A group called Walldogs came through my neighborhood last summer and did some work: http://walldogs.lyndale.org/Images/Designs/index.html
Frenchy,
When you are willing to let some of these graffiti "artists" paint the side of your house .... then I'll know you really have an appreciation for their talents.
You seem to be willing to let them deface other peoples' property ... I'm just wondering if your attitude would change if it was your house or car.
Dan
The ones I like I'd be honored to have them come in and do a room or 2. As for railkroads well they blight the landscape with their cars all of the time..
You don't seem to understand that I view most graffiti as you do.. however I am ready to acknowledge the rare exception.. Rather than lump everybody into the same band wagon..
Frenchy,
As I am sure you are aware when I said the "side of your house" I meant an outside wall of your house.
As for their great works of art on railroad cars .... if they want to paint railroad cars let them buy one of their own ... then they can paint to their hearts content.
I like to think of it this way .... I'm sure you have seen some tatoos that would qualify as works of art ... would you then argue it was all right for one of these gifted tatoo artists to display their art on someone who had not requested it.
Dan
If you looked at some of the good examples posted here I'm sure that you'd agree they show some talent..
However I do certainly agree that most "Taggers" are talentless abusers of property.. I don't really understand the culture that spends money buying spray paint and ruining nice things..
How's it go?

Because I don't know they aren't.
By the way I don't think most graffiti is done by fine upstanding citizens.. I think even some of the really well done stuff is probably done by those who aren't what you would call upstanding citizens.. But then most painters be they Van Gogh, Toulouse Latrect, or Renoir weren't really that fine or upstanding.

perhaps I need to go back to the <grin> I used to use?

Frenchy - some rap singers are pretty good, too. Their stuff even approaches the status of "music". But I wouldn't compare them to Beethoven. Come on."...craftsmanship is first & foremost an expression of the human spirit." - P. Korn

Frenchy,
van Gogh's work is STILL despised by some, I'm sure. However, his canvas was purchased or bartered for and to my knowledge, he never painted over someone else's art or property. The artists we are talking about here ARE VANDALS--albeit to all degrees of talent. Let them express themselves in the proper setting, OR face the consequences
for their actions of trespassing, vandalism, and defacing public property. I haven't even mentioned the use of vulgar language or images, curfew violations, minors in possession of a controlled substance, vagrancy, truancy, etc.
That sucks. Great mural!
I am somewhere between Buck and Frenchy. Deplore the typical tags, but have seen some pretty cool stuff also.

Small wheel turn by the fire and rod, big wheel turn by the grace of god.
My proposed punishment for people who graffitti other people's property is to amputate their thumb and index finger of their dominate hand. First offense. No other alternative. Second offense? The other hand!
Try using a spray can without a thumb and index finger!

No, probably to meet the legal requirement against cruel and inhumane treatment, the surgery should be done in an hospital environment. :)
I always thought that similar surgery should be done on quack surgeons who have repeatedly botched operations (like "plastic" surgery).
Holy smokes, Huck, is there anything you DON'T do? Framing, trim, finishing, siding (reluctantly), videographer, and now..... artist?????
Anyhow, sorry about the vandalism, but it still looks awesome after the fix.
Scott.
He also just painted his truck.
