I’m starting to plan out a bathroom remodel and am hopgin to lay a tile floor. My understanding is that thinset needs to be applied prior to laying down the cement backer board. My subfloor is tongue and groove 2X6. All the references I see regarding placement of backer board refer to laying down thinset on top of a plywood subfloor not planking as I have. Any special concerns that I should be aware of when laying down the backer board over plank type subfloor?
Do I need to laydown plywood first then the backerboard?
Also what about a vapor barrier (felt) between the backer board and the subfloor? Doesn’t seem like this is possible if thinset is placed between the backer board and subfloor. Is this needed? House is single story so working over a crawl space.
Thanks for any and all advice.

The answer varies a bit according to how much deflection youhave in what is there now and what soure of moisture you might have under this, and what size tiles you will be setting over the cement board.

I did it on my tongue and groove floor. That tongue and groove is 1" thick. I put regular thinset down, 1/4" hardibacker and then 12" porcelain tiles. Four years later it is holding up perfectly, no cracks in the grout. I didnt't use a poly vapor barrier.
So basically I think it is ok.

One of my first floor tile jobs I did started with old 1x6 subfloor (full 1" square edge), topped with thinset & 1/2" CBU screwed to the pine planks, then tile. No overlap of gaps between CBUs over gaps between planks.
Heavily used area. No problems 9 years later.
If you have the room (thickness) I'd use 1/2 or 3/4 ply, screwed and glued (PL Premium) to the planks, then waterproof membrane then tile.
Charles...when you go into John Bridges forum use the "Deflecto meter" he has. Pretty cool tool!

Oh yeh...one other thing...you really should have two layers down of subfloor not including your CBU. It should be about 1 3/8-1/4" of subfloor minimum for best results. Second layer shouldn't be screwed into the floor joists.
