This Old House Magazine?

EricPaulson | Posted in General Discussion on January 15, 2008 03:33am

Any good??

I can get 10 issues for $10.00 or 20 issues for $17.00.

Is there anything worthwhile between the covers?

I didn't renew my subscription. There is occasionally worthwhile stuff in there but you can also read it free at the news stand or library.

I got a subscription to This Old House mag expecting nothing but advertising.

Imagine my shock when there were a few homebuilding articles!Expert since 10 am.

    Eric,

I figure $10 is the cost of a good lunch. If I get one tip, thought or technique out of it, it's worth it. Maybe that's why we get so many magazines...[G]

I've read it in the past, still grab it off the newsstand if I see something that catches my eye. It's got a hint of a technical article now and then, but more aimed at the design crowd. It does cover different periods from colonial to victorian, arts and crafts, etc., but not in every issue.

It's not at all like FHB or JLC, its all fluff and ads. I'll skim it when I stop by the library for a book once in a while and I've never seen anything in there that was interesting. I wouldn't even want a free subscription, its just going to take time out of my life to flip through it and toss it in the can.

  5. MSA1 | Jan 15, 2008 05:16am | #9

Is there much of anything worthwhile for ten bucks anymore? I used to subscribe too but gave it up cause I just didnt read it anymore. I fell for the "special offer" one of the times they sent it to me and I never really found anything worth reading in it.

I'll just stick with the show.

My complaint is that it just seems like Pella mailed them some stuff and they just paste it in.

just got a $10 offer for a year of Playboy.

I'd spend that $10 over TOH.

I bit on the $10 deal once a few years back because i recalled seeing some kinda cool foldouts of locks or planes or something in earlier issues.

Somehow when they came they ended up sitting unread so later when round 2 offer came around it got the file13.

    Peace in.

For $10...whatta ya got to lose?

I subscribed.....Christmas gift from Granny....for a few years. Nothing great, but I swear TOH and FHB are stealing from one another.

One month, one would do an article on window replacement...the next month, the other would have an article on same.

Let subscription expire when Granny decided to "mix it up" one Christmas, and never re-upped.

But there were the occassional new products features every now and then.

    Eric,

This is a far better option:

    http://www.oldhousejournal.com/index.shtml

It cost twice as much, but it is five times better. The also have a new magazine called "New Old House" that is about building new with character...also good.

I get TOH, FHB, FWW, Old House Journal, Old House Interiors, New Old House, JLC, Trolls of the Trade, Remodeling, Metal Roof Digest, Rural Builder, Home Energy, plus a bunch of general interest magazines. The ones worth actually paying for in my opinion are: FHB, FWW, OHJ, OHI, NOH, JLC and Home Energy. Home energy is the most expensive at about 70 bucks/year, but well worth it. Anything worth having seems to cost 35-40 bucks. Of the freebies, I actually learn alot about business stuff from Remodeling.Steve

Steve, I don't want to get into your business but I think you need to add some fiber to your diet. 12 mags plus the general interest mags. How often do your feet go to sleep, mine do with only FHB & FWW. :)Research on the throne, go to love it.

The way I look at it, it's more of a home owner magazine then a professional building magazine, BUT for the money, I can usually find something in over the course of the year to make it worth the price of admission.

Doesn't take much of a tip or trick to save the subscription money for the year.

Besides that, it's a quick read on the cr app er

Be honest I stopped watching about half time, I can't say for sure but if we lost I'd be surprised.

Looking at the schedule I think we have a pretty decent shot at an undefeated season, Our worst game will be Missouri.  They won't be the best team we play but for some reason, no matter how bad of a team they have, every year, when we play them at MU, they come to play and play hard.

        1. catfish | Jan 15, 2008 09:44pm | #28

You must have another easy schedule next year, no Oklahoma?

Played OK last night, beat them 85 to 55

I got the $7 for 10 issues offer as well.  I'm a past subscriber and let it go for a couple of years.  Call them and get it for $7!

          3. catfish | Jan 16, 2008 04:32pm | #34

I thought you were talking about FB, being as Missouri was the only loss this year.  Big 12 all the way.

Oh no, our football team was actually respectable this year though I will say I think Missouri deserved the BCS game more then we did.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't shed any tears or loose any sleep over it.

I buy it at the newsstands every once and a while when there's an article i'm interested in.

I find the format of the magazine makes it very difficult to "flip through" it. Even the lead stories look like ads at first glance.

If you do go for it, hold out for a better deal.  My wife and I got separate offers on the same day.  My offer was 10 issues for $7.00.  She's over 50 and an AARP member, so she got offered the senior discount - 10 issues for $6.00.  Don't know why your offer was $10 and mine was $7, though.

I've never subscribed to TOH or even read an issue.  I'm an old house (1887) owner, not a builder, and to old house lovers, TOH is often an object of ridicule.  Rather than do a sensitive restoration or renovation, they have a tendency to gut the place and put in all the latest bells and whistles.  I understand it's easier and often cheaper, but if easy and cheap were my priorities, I sure as heck wouldn't own an old house in the first place!

I'll second the praise for Old House Journal.  Old House Interiors is pretty good too.  And even though our house is old, FHB offers a lot of useful information.

Hi,I see from the website that your architect is Bob Roscoe. I did some work on a house in Minneapolis that Bob was the Architect for. It was while I was working fro a contractor named Steve Madole. That wouldn't happen to be one of the guys he recommended would it?Where is your house located?Steve Zerby

          1. dpsours | Jan 16, 2008 04:11pm | #33

No, he wasn't one of the contractors Bob recommended.  Not familiar with him.

For security reasons, our web site deliberately doesn't state the city we're in.  Ya just never know who's out there.

It's weird - for the last couple of days I haven't been able to access our site, but you guys apparently have.  Comcast says they're working on the problem, and they did say they were doing some maintenance work.  Oh well.

Wonderful Octagon House you have there.

The small community here has one that housed part of the CivilWar's underground railroad complete with tunnels.

      Peace in.

  13. IamtheWalrus | Jan 16, 2008 06:38am | #31

I took them up on the same offer based on some back issues from the late ninety's I got at a free book exchange. It's much more fluff now and I'm not renewing. But if your getting desperate for new material for America's favorite reading room $10 ain't that bad.
