Never done it, but I think Andy Clifford said to wedge 'um up or something like that to hold them in place till the thinset sets.  Maybe he'll see this post.

They for sure aren't going to stick up there on their own.

Oh yes they will! If you have ever tried to pull on up that had good coverage, you will know that they will stick.

I've done it. It's a little ticky, you need to have a nice flat base, a uniform coverage of thinset and back butter the tiles with a thin layer of thinset.

Too much and the tiles will swim, too little they might crash down on you.

Play around a bit. And don't do this at night. Get a day job man.

Try http://www.johnbridge.com/ if you need more info.

      Yes they will.

      better than on walls even.

I still brace then if and when I can ... just to be safe.

if not ... big pile of drop cloths on the shower floor so no one get's woken up at 3 am!

      Crash!!!

seriously ... mix the thinset nice ... they'll stick.

did my first tile ceiling two months ago...i tried the real sticky premixed white tile mastic in the 3 gal. bucket and that worked fine w/o bracing.the fun part is grouting the ceiling. i ended up with more grout on my clothes and the floor than on the ceiling. i might mix it a little stiffer next time.

        "premixed white tile mastic"

better hope no moisture get's up in there ....

I'd be wearing a hard hat showering under a "mastic" ceiling.

i'll let you know if the homeowner gets knocked out. i had never tried it before and thought mastic would have a better grab during tile setting, had the same conerns that started this thread and had not discovered the breaktime forum so was doing more trial and error.the room has a new exhaust fan and i thought it would at least not get direct spray...but now that you mention it, steamy water vapor may be worse.i might run by there and put a few more coats of sealer on the ceiling grout at least...and i'll leave an extra hardhat on the robe hook....was having a good day.another timebomb?

to grout....  try  a grout bag next time... like a big cake frosting bag... squirt it in your joints proud... let it sit and come back and wipe...  i use em to tuck point brick also...

heard of it, sounds better...I've only done that one ceiling and from the recent feedback it could end up on the floor--so I may just want to switch back to floors. should I attempt another ceiling i'll steal my wife's frosting bag.

    What is the substrate?

I've done a few, and I haven't had any problems with them staying put.  The suction from the thinset really does hold them.

    Good luck.

I plan to use a third hand when I do my final home.  If you get your enhanced thinset (latex added) just right, you should be able to hold up the tiles for about ten minutes or less with the third hand.  They should stay in place after that.

I've done the same thing, same material. I used double duty adhesive. I got it from a tile house. Depot or Lowes doesnt carry it.
