Tile backer-board tip

McDesign | Posted in Construction Techniques on November 8, 2006 03:33am

Always scraped off the little mushrooms off that the rock-board screws leave, with my thumb.

This time I hit ’em all at the end with 60-git in the palm sander – knocked them all down quick as a wink, and no blood.

Yeah, I know I should be using Shooter-Turdy high-monkey-monk stuff, but darnit, I’m just scared.

Forrest – deck mud tomorrow

What type of board you use?

I generally use Durock and with an impact driver I can get the screws flush with nothing sticking up. If there are tiny blips the thinset goes right over them. With Hardi it's a lot more trouble to get everything flush.

We used to use durock, but now we use hardi.  No real problem with the durock, maybe it was a local industry shift.  Only advantage I'm aware of is we used to score durock and break it, whereas with hardi we can cut it with a saw.  Also durock has countersunk holes for screws and has one inch grids all over it.

Countersunk holes???? How long has this been so? I've never seen it, and did a Hardi job just recently (under the Kerdi - belt and suspenders, doncha know.)

Yeah, me neither. I mean, me, too, I've never seen neither the holes or the grid. The only thing my Durock board has printed on it is DUROCK.

Impact driver does work, tho. No 'shrooms.

But I cut it with a 4" diamond blade in an angle grinder. Score-n-snap makes me too hinky on $80-a-pop sheet goods....Dinosaur

It's not Hardibacker; I'm using ½" thick Durock. I gave up using the ¼" stuff years ago after seeing the screws pull through from the weight of the slate I'd hung on it. That would have been a very expensive call-back if it hadn't been in my own house.

Anyway, that $80/sheet price was an OOPS. I just checked my invoicing database (instead of my CRAFT-ridden memory) and we were billing it at $47.19 a sheet last April.

I've been told you can score and snap the ½" stuff, but even at a 'measly' 50 smackers each, I don't wanna take a chance of screwing up. Just call me chicken, LOL.

The 4" diamond blade in a grinder cuts with a lot less dust than a full-sized carborundum disc in the circ. When I have lots of small strips to rip precisely (say, for a curb on a walk-in shower) I'll use the TS and wear a mask....Dinosaur

Why do you think I bought a full-sized truck? Lovely thing to be able to slide in 4x8 sheet goods and close the tailgate....

Yeah, you've been screwing that up big time. You're supposed to snort the mushrooms.
