Just moved into our new townhome and decided to pull out the carpeting that was there next to vanity and tub. Separate shower and toilet rooms. My thought was to put a backer board down over plywood but when I got to shower area to pull up the stick on tile it was glued to particle board which is really glued down to the plywood. So my next thought is to buy some wonderboard type material and run it to butt into the particle board. Will that work and also they used some not very good glue to adhere the tile will I be able to put the mastic on that surface or does something have to be done to that as well. Any ideas would be appreciated?

Tear out the particle board, it's no good near water or tile. Replace it with ply and backer or ply and membrane.

Just last week I replaced a bathroom of tile over particle board, old tile came right off and so did the particle board, in chunks.
As said above, membrane or backer over plywood!
And use thinset in place of mastic. You have to mix it yourself, but it really is easy to work with, and a much better product.
