I was given some 1/4″ thick granite tiles, and I have a ledge that is begging to have them applied. It is 3 1/2 inches wide (Left-over from an unusual construction need). I have the diamond saw; used it to cut every tile that I placed around the fireplace)
What I want is some ideas to support the tile so I can have the shelf that is a little wider than the existing ledge. I have mocked up some floor trim upside down; I don’t like it but maybe another shape? Any other ideas?

¨ú" ply topped with ¨ý" ply, screwed and glued together. Make sure the substrate can't move once you mount it to the actual ledge.

Wow, somethng didn't translate properly. You probably can't see it on your pc. "Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Damn and tarnation. Youse guys gotta set yer 'VIEW'/'Encoding' sub-menu to read the split fractions my keyboard produces using the multi-lingual character-set. I'm set for 'Western Eurpoean (Windows)' encoding 99% of the time....
That was supposed to read 'three-quarter ply' and 'five-eighths ply'.

Well, down here in the Lower 48 we are set for 'mericun. We broke from the western european methods back in 1776. Too bad your reps in Quebec are still tied to the Frogs."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Reminds me of a movie from ... I think ... the 60's. The Ugly American."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Thought of that; I was only thinking about an inch of overhang, which would be enough for the junk that we lay on that ledge. And, with the plywood, there is the problem of making the edge look good. (Laziness is my name whenever possible)
I think something like a mini crown molding would look OK; maybe even a triangular piece of wood painted to match the walls. The ledge is about 18 inches from the floor, and the support would not be really visible.
An inch of overhang? Use 5/4 pine or maple, stain and varnish the edge to match the tile colour, and set a metal or plastic tile-mould under the tile to cover the vertical edge of the tile.

Now that was just too d*** simple!
I'm glad I thought of it! [grin]
How about edging the front with the same tile?
