I want to install a tiled shower. I am concerned about the base leaking over time. What is the best way to go, on site built base or a prefab tile ready base.

If you will only ever be doing one, you might want to think about a pre-made base. They are available in many sizes, and can be ordered with matching-color "tile" already in place. (Laurel Marble and Tile near Atlanta was my source.....)
Or, go to http://www.johnbridge.com, and do a lot of reading and a lot of learning. The folks at that tile forum are friendly and helpful.
When you think you've learned enough, find their thread about doing a "practice" shower pan mud base. Then make a practice pan base, or three or four.
And find a source in your area for Kerdi. Do your new shower with kerdi as the waterproof layer.
Welcome to BT.
You might want to check out Schluter's Kerdi system for your shower. You can use one of their bases, or make your own.
Do a search here for Kerdi or Schluter
Look through these threads Kerdi Shower with niche and Small Addition
Then go to John Bridge and browse the forums there. Lots of great tile and Kerdi info to be found there.

first decide if you like the look and size of prefabed or do you like the look of a tile floor
If you like the preformed base , fur out your walls so the wonderboard flies passed the lip on the base and is set approx 1/8 to 3/16 off the base
Hope I didn't scare you off from your original thread (121869.1 - which has been locked up and the key thrown away), that was just what we here call a "bump" - heh, heh. Didn't mean to be rude, Ralph! Keeps the thread going until the pundits arrive. Which I knew they would, as this subject has been discussed fervently and in depth. Lotsa info on the subject here. Has anyone explained the search function? It can be useful at a time like this.
