I’m doing a tile job in a large bathroom. The floor was covered with 12″ square adhesive vinyl tiles, which I have removed, leaving a sticky residue. It’s not gooey, just sticky. Underlayment is good quality plywood, flat and made for the purpose.
I’d like to just mix up thinset and go, but wasn’t sure if that old glue would cause any problems. I’d much rather try and remove it than add cement board over this if I need to worry about it at all.
Anyone been through this before?

I'll bet a good quality, modified thinset (the $25/bag kind) would work fine on the floor but I would personally lean toward applying 1/4" backer board even if it meant additional height to the finished floor. Is the floor stiff enough to support the tile application?
*Ralph,Thanks for replying quick. I knew you'd (and Cal, Mongo) be good for this type of advice. The floor is very stable. I'd feel fine about it without the stickiness. I don't have a height issue at all. If I added 1/4" board, the height would actually be perfect to match adjoining room. But it's a big area, and I didn't feel like spending more money unless I really had to.
*MD, Like the other guys said, Id go with the backer board also. Ralph thanks for the heads up.
*yeah, I decided to buy cement board. It'll work out fine. Spent a little more but it's a better install.
