The architect/builder, who supplies most of my work, is back on his tree kick again… this time, as structural posts holding up vaulted hips.
The logs will be 12″ diameter pine or cypress. I’ve done some other log work out of cypress, and the cross-sectional shrinkage was remarkable, maybe more than an inch over 12″. I am a bit worried about the notches splitting over time. Archys not.
The gluelam hips will be partially buried in the ceilings. There will be some sort of welded steel joinery hidden up there, too…but I’d love some more suggestions.
The center pole in the studio will now have the two 12′ gluelams totally below the 5’6″ gluelam.
besides getting a bunch of younger guys, any tips or tricks cutting, notching and morticing these babies with regular trim guys tools, and/or a sequence of erecting events without viagra, would be greatly appreciated.
