Hi, I’m new here, and am planning to build a home in about two years. I read a lot about timberframe construction that sounds appealing, but have to confess that I just don’t like the look of all those posts and beams on the interior of the house. Is it possible to build a timberframe but conceal the frame? Or has anybody had experience with painting the frame, so that it’s a little more unobtrusive? I know you purists will think I’m being ridiculous, but please be kind. Thanks.

You don't have to ever expose posts and beams. Most do it to show off their skill and to show the beauty of the timbers.. You could do a semi timberframe whereby the rafters are the only part that is actually timberframed. stick build up to the top plate and make sure the walls will carry the load of the individual beams..
What is it about timberframing that attracts you to a timberframe?
Is it the strength, the efficency, the character?
Maybe I could help you achieve what you seek without the full expense of a timberframe.
As for painting the timbers, sure why not? It is after all your house. May I suggest one thing? Just prior to painting the beams slap a quick coat of shellac on the timbers?
That way if you ever decide to change your mind and expose the timbers it's a simple job to strip the paint. The other benefit if you put a coat of shellac on is that you won't get any bleed thru from knots etc.. white will stay white and not turn pink in some areas..
Big box stores like Home depot and Lowes carry it already mixed. Just buy two gallons of denatured alcohol and mix with the gallon of already mixed shellac.. that makes three gallons so it is really cheap. You don't have to be careful about shellacing it. it won't show runs or drips when it's that thin. one coat is all you will need and it's dry 15 minutes after you put it on..
