I am getting set to put up a tin ceiling, and want to know if any of you have done them, and can offer any advice. My plan is to level the ceiling (it is about 1-1/2″ out across 12′) with 1×3 strapping shimmed and screwed to the ceiling joists on 12″ centers, then nail with those nifty cone nails that come from the tin ceiling vendor. Questions I had were whether to predrill nail holes (before or on ceiling) and any tips on fitting tin cornice to cut panels at the ceiling.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated as always. Rich.

Rich, I helped install a tin ceiling several years ago and dont remember pre drilling for nails. Good idea on leveling the ceiling, as for the cornice one thing I remember is it's not very forgiving on crooked walls so anything you can do to make the walls straight and flat where the cornice lands will really make things easier.

*b TVMDCLeveled a ceiling that was 4" out of whack over 12' using 2x4's, 4x2's and 1x2 shims nailed into the ceiling joists. Covered the shims with 1/2" plywood to give a nailing surface for the tin panels. Predrilling the tin helps speed-up the work.Good luck!
*No need to drill holes.
*I watched a tin ceiling being installed one day. I remember that they used two people on a low platform rather than step-ladders; one held while the other nailed. Keeping the seams even and straight must be an important aspect to this because they were continually eye-balling the seams, checking with a long straight-edge, and laying down chalk lines across the ceiling. Even with all that messing around, they were really fast.
