Not cordless but we've been happy with the Shop Vac 1x1. Get the one with the 18' cord (I didn't). Great for stairs and tight spots. It runs around $40.00. http://www.shopvac.com/web/products/1x1.shtml I haven't tried it but Makita has a cordless vac http://www.makita.com/cordless_item_View.asp?id=237 It runs about $70.00. I passed on it because the dust bag holds only a little more than a pint.
