Need some assistance here. Most of my work is becoming t&m rather than square foot pricing. Statesville/Mooresville NC area.
Do most of you let the current regional market determine what you charge, or is there a common formula? I don’t like the thought of just getting the most I think I can–seems unethical. Am I being naive?
If you’re motivated primarily by greed, and bid your projects as such, please don’t respond to this post.
Thanks,
David

We do mostly T+M work too. We charge what we need to in order to pay employees a decent wage, benefits, and other overhead costs including a small profit for the business. How that stacks up against other builders doesn't really matter. Sell the quality of the service you offer, not how you cost the same as the other guy.
I don't know what the competition charges and havent't been concerned about that for years. My rates are based on what it takes to pay the best help and make a profit.

My rates are based on my and my companys needs. What others charge is there business. I find it really doesn't matter. Some will complain your to high no matter what you charge and those who know you and the quality of your work will think your the best bargain around.
The old adage... if your to busy to have the weekends for yourself and your family your too cheap on the other hand if you are up on the latest Opra maybe your rates are to high.
It's more complicated than that but basicly don't let anyone dictate to you your income.
Never try to compete with the lowest common denominator. If you really can't get what you think you are really worth then a carear path change is in order. Not nice, but sometimes reality rarely is.
