Good Day:
I have a client who wants to rebuild her porch using the traditional turned balusters shown below. The existing balusters are sound but the paint is lead of course and chipping. I wish to either dip the bulusters or buy new if I can find a decent price. At the moment I am open to either option though I would imagine dipping is cheaper. The balusters are to be painted when finished.
Any suggestions for stripping services in the New England area?
thanks
Dan

I feel guilty farming out that lead-based-paint work, but most shops have at least minimal safety training, so it’s probably OK.
And it's cool to save that old hand-work: look back and forth between balusters, comparing details, and you'll notice that each one is similar to the others, but not an exact replicate:
Compare the third from the right to the second from the right, for example, and notice that the main taper is slimmer. Also, the bead at the top of the taper is a little thinner than the one on the second.
If you got replacements, they’d probably all be exact duplicates of whichever one you pulled to be copied. That’s OK, but saving the old stuff is cooler.

thanks HKI think that argument will go a long way to justifying whatever the cost of stripping will be..Dan
If you remove, do you have to replace and bring to current code?
The problem is that you will have a problem with those ballesters meating existing code. You have a height requirement.
Is the end of the existing bottom rail cut straight but the post is round?
