Thanks Eric. I receive JLC and FHB, but not this one...until now!

JLC?
That'd be the Journal of Light Construction, another Hanley Woods rag
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
JLC
Journal of Light Construction.
Great rag. Better than FHB in my opinion. (Hope Big Brother ain't watching!) But to be fair, it depends on what you do. I'm a nuts and bolts guy. I build the buildings with my hands as a framer. I don't build them from a computer and I don't choose the products and details that finish them off. JLC is more nuts and bolts, in my opinion.
Thank you. I will check it out.
They have a great website and a useful forum as well. Definately worth a look-see. The forum isn't anywhere near as active as this one, but it's not as loose either. Not much bullshi11ing to be had over there, but a great place to get your questions answered.
Of course, it's for building professionals only. ;-)
Stacy's mom has got it going on.
Brian,
I have to agree with you about the forum at JLC. I do however think that the info is generally better. Have you spent much time in the finish forum? Those guys are insanely cool. The framing forum is great too, especially if you go back into the archives and look up the roof framing info. I'd say I learned 70% of what I know about roof framing from that forum and the rest from books and onsite "tinkering"
By the way, I talked to Emma and Bob at Bigfoot at JLC LIVE and they can make a Headcutter with a bigger plate :-). I bought their new layout stick and I can't wait to try it out.
Hi Tim,
You haven't had any problems with Bigfoot's customer service or trying to order directly from them, huh? Last time I tried to place an order I got brushed off and referred to Amazon which didn't have what I needed.
You use layout sticks, huh? I've never used one. I don't understand how they're any faster than a tape and it just seems like another tool to trip over on the deck. But I'm obviously missing something. What is it?
Regarding JLC Forums, I hope it didn't come across that I was bad mouthing JLC. I was just trying to tell him that it's not as "chatty" as it is around here. Sometimes that's a good thing. I agree that there is a greater amount of 'specialized' information over there on the whole.
Brian,
To be honest, Emma can be a bit, umm, touchy. She was mad that we modified the Headcutter, but I told her and Bob that it didn't work well the way they sell it. They told me they've modified them before for guys and can for us, so that is the route we'll take.
They have agreements with lumberyards, Amazon, Whitecap, etc that prevent them from selling their products at the same or lower price as the above places, except at tradeshows. Bob said to call if you need parts though for Skil, Bosch, Ridgid (yeehaw) saws.
I tried to get over and talk to them a few times so that they know my face. I've talked to them on the phone before, but its nice to talk to them face to face and I told them how many Bigfoot tools we own (2K worth)
As far as layout sticks go, I can layout studs for a wall as I walk the wall, and I don't have to scribe the marks with a speedsquare. It's accurate as long as you pay attention. If I walk the wall once to layout 16" oc, then I have to walk it again to square the marks, with a layout stick I'm done in one trip. It's great for laying out topplates for the joists or Rafters also. In the crawl, we snap a line front to back and then layout the girders off that. I can fly with a layout stick and I don't have to tack a nail and hook my tape on each girder and then come back and pound it flush.
I didn't think you sounded bad about JLC forums, but I've found there to be better info there than here, but here it is more chatty which I like.
good magazine- I've been getting it for years.
lots of good reviews in there
Just saw that about two weeks ago. I signed up and i'm waiting for the first issue.
not a bad magazine at all ...
nothing I'd ever pay for ...
but well worth the price!

I love that rag. My only complaint is that it's bi-monthly. I could read tool and product reviews for hours on end. Can't beat the price either.
