40-560 here
I have the 40-560 16" scroll, I've had it for about 20 years. It's been used for some woodworking, but mostly craft stuff. My wife even took ownership of it for a few years. The craft use was along the same lines as you intend; ornaments, toys, cutouts, wood picture puzzles, etc.
Never had issues.
I can't help with the saw, but from the date of your post, I'd say you're getting started plenty early. I'd be asking questions like that in November or December.
