Tool Rant

bubbajames | Posted in Tools for Home Building on January 2, 2010 11:13am

I was all set to buy one of the old 5.5 Amp Milwaukee magnum Holeshooters with the feeling that someday I could hand it down to my son as a testament to the quality of an American made tool. Then I read that the manufacturing of this drill was now Made in China. Too bad, as these drills were legend. If I wanted a Chinese drill, I would have bought a Hitachi… So I figure A German made tool is the next best thing, so I bought the Bosch 1034VSR 1/2 inch corded drill. Turns out it is made in Switzerland. Amazon used to list the Country of manufacture under tool specs, but has stopped doing so. I pride myself in the fact that I look to buy American made tools, such as: -Klein Electrical tools -Old Stanley work master screw drivers -Channel lock pliers -Rigid Plumbing tools -Milwaukee Drills and sawzall -Craftsman Industrial tools(3 recip saws, a drill and an impact gun) -3 Makita cordless drills(Buford, Ga.) -2 Black and Decker quantum Pro Drills Remember when Home depot began selling Husky tools-They were made in USA! I bought or traded some craftsman tools to get the box end wrenches. Now I think most if not all husky is Chinese crap. Lowes lost its agreement with Milwaukee, Klein and Makita, So Home Depot has the exclusive rights to sell these brands while Lowes carries such garbage as B&D firestorm, The craptized line of Porter Cable(didn’t Black and Decker Ruin that brand?)And Tradesman. There is some Bosch here and there, but it is made in China and Malaisia. I guess to get quality, one has to hit the Pawn shops, Garage sales and Flea markets to find the Made in USA tools that made some of these brands famous.

It's a pretty dismal state of affairs. I wouldn't be surprised if our US currency printing was outsourced to China! Even a lot of "Made in USA" products contain a lot of foreign components. I do like a lot of European products, but try to buy American when possible.

I'm curious about your statement regarding Boach and "Made in Switzerland." I don't know why there would really be any difference between that and "Made in Germany."

Not much I guess. Both are

associated with precision engineering I suppose...

Needed a new jigsaw. The Bosch 1587 was on sale @ Lowe's for only $99.00. That is really good price - the same as the CPO tools online.

The display model was made in USA - nice, I thought.

When I opened the new one it was made in China.

Looks the same, seems to run smoothly just seems like false advertising to display an american made tool and sell a chinese made one.

I wonder if they would sell me the display model or if that is their "teaser".

Interestingly enough, Stanley power lock tape measures are made in USA

Curious as to where your pickup and TV are made. :)

My truck is a 99 suburban, so I would guess either canada or Mexico. Electronics are made in China, I cannot help that.

Yup..."made in USA" tools seem to be going the same way as the DODO bird and Tatoo-less strippers....

    :~)

who does the design on chinese tools? US company or the chinese boy scouts? - seems the ideal tool would be US design but manufactured in china to take advantage of the cheap labor- but what you get is crappy design and parts/material substitutions

who else on line sells Makita?

Solution might be to buy only from japanese companies- they seem to control their vendors more closely.

For the compressor, I would buy it at a brick and mortar store, such as fastenal, or have HD order it.
