I thought about this today, I have a ton of tools that I bought for one job or a few and I haven’t used them since. Or a bunch of tools I don’t use at all for many reasons.
I am sure that I am not alone, a few of you are probably like me. Maybe, maybe not. What if we posted tools that we would like to trade for something else, or lists that others can pick from and offer a trade.
What is not useful to me might be to someone else. Heres a small list that might interest some of you.
2-Paslode Coil Framers, shoot up to 3-1/4″ nails. Paid around $350, moderate use. Probably worth $100 each. One gone to Diesel Pig
Paslode Impulse Framing nailer great shape used a few times $200
Porter Cable stick nailer used 3 times $100
1- 7-1/4″Milwaukee worm drive can’t be killed $25
Paslode 18 gauge brad nailer $40
Porter Cable 16 gauge straight finish nailer $45 with lots of different length nails
Shopsmith Mark V good shape local pick up $200.
JIT roofing nailer used once $50
Skil 8-1/4″ circular saw, used twice, bevels to 60 degrees $200 Bigfoot replaced it
quik drive screw gun with stand up attachment $75 Gone to David Hawks
Dremel Scroll saw $25
2- 24′ wooden extension ladders $30 each local pick up
Milwaukee 7-1/4″ circular saw drop foot table, needs trigger/ cord $10 LOST
Porter Cable half blind dovetail jig used once $125
150 BD ft of rough sawn curly maple, highly figured from what I have milled, not sure what it’s worth
These are very fair approximate values, tools are all purchased by me and not stolen. All are ready for everyday use except the Milwaukee side winder
A couple of tools I am looking for:
6-1/2″ Skil wormdrive circular saw older model, repairable
Porter Cable trim saw 4-1/2″? older model, repairable
Alaskan saw mill,
Hitachi NV-75 used, doesn’t need to work, but repairable
Make an offer who knows maybe I need something I don’t know about yet. Pictures are available on request. It’s a shame to have these laying around when someone can be using them.
David Hawks if you see somethng on this list you want speak up, I got that saw yesterday. I’ll get it headed east asap for you. Your saw got me thinking about this.

I'm with you Matt. Got some stuff myself I should probably let go of, but simply can't bring myself to do it for whatever reason.
Got a 1st gen. Paslode Impulse that has never worked right. I pull it out maybe twice a year hoping it has resurrected itself, but it's always the same...5 shots, then nothing. LOL!
Have actually been in the market for a stand-up screw gun. How about set that aside for me and we'll hammer out the details tomorrow?

I also have a Paslode Impulse, newer model that I need to get rid of. Works great, just never really have used it.

I just found this thread.
I have a first generation Paslode framer too. How 'bout I trade it for the new one, even trade. I'll even pay the shipping and you get a collector's item!;)

This trade depends on whether Gunner gets back to me or not... But...I'll trade you a slightly used toothbrush for that antique.;o)

Depends where that toothbrush has been, but it might be right at home beside the original Paslode. That thing was a real turd. I have borrowed some parts off it for the newer orange one though.

Thats the way I used to think, I still do on some things. But I hate just looking at some of these tools and not using them, they take up alot of room and someone could probably use them.
Thanks for the saw, strangers kindness is a very rare thing these days. Feel free to pick something out if you like.

What's the Hitachi NV-75?
I can't seem to pass a pawn shop without going in to look at the tools.
Those small PC's are still around on occasion.Live in the solution, not the problem.
A NV 75 is an all around coil framing gun. I haven't used one before but I'll give it a run from all the good reviews I've read about it.
I can't find a small PC trim saw anywhere around me, I've been looking for a year or so now.
Matt- Woods favorite carpenter.
I use the Bostitch N-80C as my workhourse utility nailer, but I know the Hitachi you're referring to. Saw one in a pawn shop in Nashville, TN 2 weeks ago. No green, just aluminum body right?
I also got to thinking, I've used the Makita 5007NB sidewinder exclusively since I started this ride back in '86. Don't make 'em like they used to. Am interested in getting a couple of older ones if anybody has one mothballed.
Is that PC sometimes referred to as a "cabinet saw"?Live in the solution, not the problem.
Thats the NV-75 I believe, shoots up to a 3" nail.
I have two Bostitch N-80's and those are also my work horses. I just bought a new Max that is the best coil nailer I laid my hands on. It wants to drive a nail more than the N-80's do.
The PC is referred to as a cabinet saw also.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for that Makita too. Does it have a drop foot base plate?
Matt- Woods favorite carpenter.

Good deal, I'll keep my eyes out here as well.
Check you're email, that stand-up is good as gone.Live in the solution, not the problem.
If you send me an E-mail let me know. As alot of you know I don't check my in box very often. I'll check it if I know theres something there.
Thanks
Matt- Woods favorite carpenter.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for that Makita too. Does it have a drop foot base plate?
If you mean drop-foot like a Milwaukee...NO.
It has a lever between the back side of the upper guard and the handle that locks/unlocks a sliding rail. Shoe pivots at the front near the bevel adjustment.
BTW, having trouble emailing you. Keeps coming back to me. How about sending me one I can reply to?Live in the solution, not the problem.
Matt, I don't know what gives, but I got your email, replied back to it, and that too bounced back to me?!?! Not sure what to do, but don't really want to post my home address on the web either. Got another email address I can try? Or add my email address to your address book so that it will get received or something?View Image
I got your emails, I am not sure what gives. I called my internet provider and they said everything looked fine but will call me tommorrow after they look into it further.
I'll send you another email with my address and phone number, if you have any issues with the gun. It's in great shape so I doubt that will happen.
Thanks
Matt- Woods favorite carpenter.
Sweet.... so you've got my address then? That's weird about the email.... I got those scary looking "undeliverable" emails back so I assumed....
Anyway.... the Hitachi I'm sending you is definitely used bro. It works good, the rubber grip is still in tact, it's got a Dead On rafter hook on it.... but looks used. Should I take a pic for you? Don't want any disappointments if you're sending me a shiny looking nailer.View Image
I got your address and number, I'll get my gun on its way to you soon. Give her h3ll man.
If it's a gun that can be used on a semi regular basis then I would be happy with it. Thats about the extent of the action it'll see for a little while.
Mine isn't brand new, I've built 6-7 houses with it.
It also has the Dead on rafter hook mounted to it. I just had to redrill a couple holes for it to fit.
I would rather that Paslode be used daily then every once in a while with me. THats part of the reason for this thread.
Framing has dropped off the table here. I don't need the framing setup that I used to. A few guns and saws wiil do me until things get better here.
BTW, what did you assume? I got booted maybe?
What type of nails does it shoot? Wire coilated? The Paslode shoots 15 degree wire coilated nails.
Matt- Woods favorite carpenter.
Edited 12/3/2007 6:01 pm ET by Stilletto
Naw, I didn't think you got booted.... I just meant I assumed to didn't get my emails. That's why I kept trying. I swear I'm not a stalker or anything. ;)
The Hitachi I'm sending you works just fine.... we just don't use it much at all. I could really use another full size coil nailer as a back up... hence the trade.
The Dead On hanger.... you know how they have two hooks on 'em? Well I always grind one of them off. So yours will be that way.... one hook ground off. Shoots regular old wire collated nails.
Bummer that there's no framing going on. It's slowing up here too. But the 5000sqft and up market seems to be holding steady and that's where I've been making my living. Prices have dropped off a fair amount too. This summer I cut out some dead weight on my crew and added a couple heavy hitters. Everyone cringes when I say it, but the truth is I've been making up the difference in pricing with production and longer hours. We're still working 50 hr weeks when the weather lets us... pretty much as long as it's day light we're working... and some Saturdays too. If I had the crew I have now, a couple years ago when the prices were great..... I'd be making a killing. Aw well.... can't have everything. At least I've got a good crew, we're all making money, and I seem to be staying busy for now anyway.View Image
Sounds like this deal is win-win then.
I don't need 6 full size framers now, I could use an all around gun for the remodeling market that has me buried right now. So a 75 sounded like a good fit for me.
You might have to knock the dust off mine but it'll be a good fit once it gets oiled up. I'm just glad to see it's going to good crew.
We need more framing pics too. Where are those?
Matt- Woods favorite carpenter.
Yeah, I haven't been keeping up with the camera lately. Last house we did took 7 weeks and was only about 5500 sqft. Had a bell shaped dormer with live valleys tieing into a 14 pitch roof, a couple of barrel vaults, a couple of octagon shaped rooms/roofs... some fun stuff.
But I slightly underbid it and by the end of the job, the very site of the place made me sick. I just couldn't bring myself to take pictures of the place. LOL.... I'm a little stubborn like that. I do need to get back there with a camera though... too much portfolio material to not swallow my pride and go back there.View Image
I have underbid frames before, not by a little either. One I figured out that I made $300 for 3 weeks. All my guys and bills were paid but thats a tough paycheck to look at. LOL
Try and keep warm, winters coming. Have a good holiday chief. Enjoy your new gun, I know I will.

I've got one of the PC trim saws, with a metal case and edge guide and several new carbide blades. It would be hard to part with. But, well... I dunno. It's not so old, but its not much used either. I'm no pro, but I lusted for that saw and got one at a weak time. Had her for 10 or more years, but she's just sitting out in the cold shed now. I maybe half wore out one blade in it, maybe not even that much. Also has some plywood blades and the original steel blade, tube of worm grease, like it's stuck in a time warp.
Sounds like you should send it up here, anything on my list you like? Anything you need?
Matt- Woods favorite carpenter.
I can't think of anything I need right now, didn't see anything on your list. Maybe we can work out a deal. Those blades are expensive, probably got $100 in just those alone. I'll have to think on it.
Let me know if you decide to sell it. I'd give it a good warm home.

Don't think Frank is gonna be much fonder of the Hitachi. I've got one and have all the same problems with it that made me sell my Paslode. It is nice for an occasional punch out or something... but not much more. Now that I think about it.... it did save my butt one time. I went to a frame on a Sunday morning because they were predicting high winds and we had gables up with just 'normal' bracing. I drove the jeep and not the truck cuz it was a Sunday. As I pulled up, I remembered that we had run the compressor dry on Friday and the gas cans were on the truck.... along with my belt and hammer. It was nice to see the Hitachi cordless sitting there in the trailer though......and even nicer to see that the battery had held a charge! LOL!View Image

No problem at all. But gift was what I had in mind. heres the deal . I have my fathers , same #7 except his has both the Stanley and Bailey names on it. His name and the date Aug 31 engraved on it from when he got his Journeymen Pattern Makers card. The one I will send you isn't something I use, I picked it up in my travels and I like to pass on things that others will . I have owned it for many years and never really used it because I had My fathers to use. it will need a tune up and you will notice a couple of notches filed in the body just forward of the iron. Looks like someone once hung it from a wire or something so the tool is not in mint condition. Try to send me your address thru breaktime, let me know here in this thread when you do as Prospero almost always refuses to pass mail on to me. After you get the plane we will discuss what and how for payment. Deal?

(Beater 78 ford , 9' flat bed, heavy duty suspension, two gas tanks , custom lumber rack, Good tires, strong motor, body is , well it's a work truck. Used truck as a form hauler for my 2' x 8' x 3/4" oiled form ply forms (BBOE IIRC). which I also want to unload, about 50 panels that size plus a large collection of cutters. Forms are used but in good shape , up until this winter always stored under cover and well oiled. Large quantity of clips for the forms, both 6" and 8", plus straps and misc stuff. 3/4" steel form stakes, maybe 300 of them , ranging in sizes from 12" to 30".. mostly 16' and 24" Old (and I mean OLD) power trowel , can't remember if it a Goldbatt or Marshalltown. Still works, combi blades on it. Small 30" IIRC. Knowing that as soon as I make this decision that i will have someone call and ask my to do a job that I would use it all for. ;-)

Excellent, be looking for my new toy. Never used one on decks, afraid I couldn't get the accurate placement I try for. Love 'em on Hardibacker and other types of flooring that don't require precision.

You'd be suprised with the accuracy once you get comfortable with the gun.
I throw all my 5/4 boards on to the deck, tack them in place with a 15 gauge nail. Bend them into place if need be. Then snap white chalk lines to screw to. The white chalk wipes away.
The trim nail holes are almost invisible. We were pumping out 1-2 decks a day depending on size. Woods favorite carpenter

You have any 23g micropinners in your arsonal? I have one, cadex (basic model, dont know the #) shots up to 1 3/16ths.
I bought this from a guy I worked with, he got tool envy and had to have the same one as his co-worker, I dont have much in it but it works fine, doubt it has shot 500 pins.

the PC says 22 degree round head nailer, ive never used it, it was a promotion from a lumber yard for buying a garage package.
the cap nailer $100+shipping i was hoping for, used alot but still worked the day gave up roofing last year when i fell =) i have about 6 boxes of caps and nails id throw in for free too with the deal. not sure what shape they are in.
Woods favorite carpenter
O.k.you still in battle creek? and how much for the PC?
id like $75 for the PC and yes im still in Battle Creek. Woods favorite carpenter
I'd be interested in both the cap nailer and the pc if the shipping isn't too much.
shipping probably will be $25 or so, so your looking at $200 or so man out the door.

Got your package yesterday Matt. Thanks for the deal and thanks for this thread. It's been fun to follow and see the generosity of BTers towards their fellows

Hope that doesn't OFFEND anyone.

Good deal, I hope everyone else got theres too. If not it should be soon. Look at the depth setting on the nose, something funny with it. It won't stay in one spot. My tool rep said it's a $5 fix, I didn't get to it before I sold it, sorry.
I sent yours out with Diesel Pigs (waiting on gun), Rob Wes's (waiting on check), and Andys (waiting on check).
I sent out the Cordless Paslode two days ago to Bowz, he wants to trade for his saw mill. I wanted him to test the gun first before he agreed, I haven't used it in a year. I hope he agrees I need a hobby now that it's snowing out and I can't golf.

dude just got the gunS thanks so much. you're so generous. thanks so much. Now I have to get the compresser and air hose so I can test it. Then I'll send the check, sorry it's taking so long, dad's rule.
I'm glad you like them, I figured since I was sending one I better throw in the other to help someone get started.
You'll find out there is nothing wrong with the guns, they were in use up until I sent them out. Be sure to oil them before each use and you should get alot more miles out of them.
Did you get the 4 boxes of nails too? I shipped them too. Woods favorite carpenter

Matt,
I got the coil nailer on Saturday and it appears to be in great shape. Thanks very much bro... great idea for a thread. It's in about the same condition as the nailer I sent you so I think you'll be pleased as well. Your package shipped this morning via USPS Priority Mail (2-3 days) so I expect you'll have it by weeks end, no problem. Dig around a bit in the box, I threw in a little something extra since it took me so long to hold up my end of the deal. BTW... I think you'll recognize the shipping box. ;)View Image
Glad you like the gun and hope you give it a good home. It was a solid nailer for me.
You didn't have to throw in anything extra either.

few quetions:
1. Is it dangerous to plug your gun right into the compresser with out a hose. (I'm desperate)
2. when you drain the tak should the gauge read zero, or is som psi still going to remain?
Dangerous and pointless. I sent you 2 brand-new hoses this morn. (priority mail); you should have them by Fri. One has fittings, the other does not.
My experience with the guages on contractor compressors is that they aren't exactly NASA quality, and therefore are subject to a +/- 5 psi margin of error. If I weren't reading dead empty after drainage, I wouldn't sweat it. You need to be more concerned about where you drain that nasty, rusty h2o. Like NOT on your dad's clean concrete driveway or in mom's mudroom.
Words to live by.Live in the solution, not the problem.
Wait for the hose. Be difficult to test the gun directly off the compressor. Depending on the accuracy of the gauge it may appear that there is still some pressure . As long as the drain is open and there is nothing coming out of it then the tank is empty, unless of course there is a plug from debris caught in the drain. Close the drain and then reopen it, that will disturb any plug and allow whatever pressure is remaining to bleed out.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
yeah thing is I could hear it slow and eventually stop. yet the gauge was still at like 40 psi.
3. how do yo uset the compresser for a desired psi?
4. should I keep the drian valve open till I use it next?
5. There are two gauges relativitaly close to each other, Is one the tank and the other the air line?
(sorry for hijaking the thread, one response and lets get back to topic.)

If you have the PC pancake.
The big plastic knob with the notched stops on the bottom of a guage (the one on the right in my case), that's how you adjust the line pressure. The other guage is the pressure at the tank. Set the line pressure according to the gun recommended pressure.
I drain after each use and leave open. On cold starts (real cold) I might leave the valve open when I turn on the compressor (did this most often with an oiled compressor) for a half minute or so. If I don't-esp on the oiled model-the draw might be sure to pop a 15a breaker.
Your best bet is to get or download, the instructions with all your new equipment and read it. A little late to read about that one thing that might screw you, after it does.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

First I want to second what calvin posted. Google your compressor manufacturer up , download instructions.
That also applies to your new guns. READ and FOLLOW the instructions. They are called GUNS for a reason.
Don't point it unless you are willing to shoot it. As for the gauges: generally one is tank pressure, one is line pressure. Tank pressure gauge is always "upstream" of regulator and line gauge. Line pressure gauge is either a part of or downstream from the regulator. Sometimes a gentle tap on a gauge will get it to move , they do stick sometimes. Regulator is most often a plastic cap about 1 1/2 diameter with arrows on the top of that will have "+ / - " on it , or will say "increase/decrease" in conjunction with the arrows. Usually have to lift up the cap by pulling straight up on it then turn in the desired direction to increase or decrease pressure. Line Gauge should change to reflect the change in pressure. Adjust the Line pressure to what your gun instruction manual calls for.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
should you also release line pressure at the end of the day? if so how
I guess it backs off back through the tank valve, the pressure should drop along with the tank pressure.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.
Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.
http://www.quittintime.com/
well then, my tank gauges absolutly s***. is that a problem? The tank one is off by like 40 psi and the line on is off by 80 psi or is stuck, Ill check.
Edited 12/11/2007 7:23 pm ET by andyfew322
You've released the tank air and those are the readings you're getting?
And tapping on the gauge don't zero them out?
Then I guess you're right and need to change out those gauges.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Don't worry too much about the guages Andy. They're short money and easy to change on most compressors. I'm lucky to get six months out of the ones on my framing compressors. I usually keep a half dozen of them in my trailer. Got a pro-level tool store in your area... one that does repairs and service as well as sales? Might be a fine time to get familiar with them, introduce yourself, and pick up a couple new guages.View Image
oh don't worry I'm famous with my local store who does have a repair shop.
no my gauges don't s*** they were stuck. the air line one worked after I turned the regulator lower. Is this right?
Edited 12/11/2007 8:08 pm ET by andyfew322
andy, You just might hike yourself down to a local auto store if you need gauges. Most good auto stores sell them and are knowledgeable about compressors. Sound like what you need is a hands on tutorial from someone experienced with compressors.

You bought seventy three grand worth of tools in the last year to year in a half? And someone stole them all in one night? Out of your truck? What were they all? Hiltis or something? Seventy three grand stolen out of the back of a pickup?

I've had 10,000# one my old one ton truck, although that was way too much. The weight he mentioned might possibly work, but I would think it would be squatting in the back awfully badly.
To the victors go the specimen bottles.
OK let's say someone is driving around with over 2 tons of tools in their truck and consider that normal everyday necessaries. Now think about the list of tools he says he's carrying. I don't think he can fit all that into a truck. Remember there's a CNC router involved.

Matt,
I would be interested in the Paslode Impulse Framer.
Got an antique 2 ton metal lathe to trade but shipping would be a b!tch. LOL!
Or you could talk me out of my Alaskan Mill that I haven't used in 6 years. I have a 36" Stihl bar, a rip chain and crosscut chain I'd like to go with it, cause they'd be no use to me without the mill. It has cut less than 200 ft, and I have they original paperwork for it. Tried to use it with an old Stihl 08 that didn't have the power to cut well. Probably be another 6 years until I had the need to try it again.
Bowz
I am not sure if my Husky would turn over a 36" chain.
Is the mill adjustable, I know my saw will easily handle a 24" bar and chain, when ripping slabs.
I'll do it, if you would like to.

Didn't you say your Husky was a 5 horse? The old Stihl 086 I use to use (for chainsaw milling) had a 36" bar and I think it was only a 5 horse. I think that monster of yours would work fine. I KNOW you didn't buy it to mount a Bigfoot to it and cut rafters. <g>Live in the solution, not the problem.

Cool thing with yahoo and most others are the optional accounts you can add.

It was very easy, the registration at yahoo was very quick. I had setup an account months ago there and never used it.

No charge.
I'll have to explain the process some of use here..it's like that Movie, Pay it Forward. A few folks here have sent me stuff, I sent stuff to a few others..sometimes it is a NO Charge deal sometimes we'd pay a small amount or shipping.
In this case, being as I have rec'd from others a freebie, it now gets passed on to you, you in turn someday may pass it on to someone else who needs something.

Got it yesterday, cashed it, spent it.
How's the saw?
Good deal, the saw is pretty sweet. I like how light it is.
Sounded a little rough when I first fired it up, but that went away after I had it running for a few minutes.
I have to read the instructions and figure out where to put oil in it still. Woods favorite carpenter
FKA- Stilletto
I thought it has a lot of power for it's size. It sounded OK when I tried it here, but it may need a spot of lube. It seemed a tiny bit slow when it started, but it was very cold out. It has some oil residue leaking out, but I think it holds a good bit of lube, and everything else is sealed bearings.
I put a few pencils in the package, the red ones are handy sometimes.
Edited 12/21/2007 5:23 pm ET by MarkH
I saw the pencils, thanks.
I have no issues with the saw, it's as cold here as it is there and it needs to warm up a little. My everyday wormdrives start up slow when it's winter. Normal operating procedure.

I'd be very interested in that SCMS if we could come to terms. All I currently have in that dept. is a 10" Dewalt compound. To say the least, it has it's limitations. I don't do much fancy trim so it's hard for me to justify a 600.00 saw. For the several times a year I'd need it, I think your Freud would more than fit the bill.
Let me know.

Well, I haven't a clue what that would cost to ship, but the saw is worth maybe 75.00? with a decent blade ( I have a brand new one from Joe, never used, if I can find it.) and decent one on it.
I just operates sporadically, the trigger is iffy, and the brake won't work..but I have never had a blade brake last very long in ANY mitersaw.

Great thread.
I looked in the inventory and I do have a few things I would part with.
EZ smart guide and the PC saw set up for it. This might require some tweaking.
DW621 router.
PC 6" ROS (the "right angle" kind) with metal case and hose.
I have pix if need be. All of this is in great shape (original manuals and all as well). Not sure who has what but I'd be interested in some kind of right-angle drill (super hole hawg or something like that) in decent shape. Would consider selling also.
Most nights are crystal clear, but tonight it's like he's stuck between stations.
I've wondered about gettign an EZ smart guide. Any idea what you want for it? What exactly might require some "tweaking" on it?Don't know that I have anything much to trade, but will give it some thought.

I meant the saw and the base. I've never gotten it to cut perfectly but I'm not much of a fiddler. The rail itself is really well engineered, and might need a new anti-chip edge on one side.
I'll email you.
Actually scratch that-I just saw your profile that said no email please.

Probably like $350 plus shipping depending on where you are located. They will move allot more air than the delta units. wow this is so awsome!!!!!!
so $40, do you need me to pay for shipping? give me the final price and I'll send the money on its way as soon as I can.
I am going to UPS tommorrow with the first round of tools. I am going to send the gun to you, you send me a check asap. I have no idea what shipping is going to run. But in total it will be $40+shipping.
I also agree with Calvin the 16 gauge is a better all around gun. Longer nail capacity and better holding power are two things that the 16 gauge offers over the 18.
The 18 is a nice gun for small tasks, returns on trim, small mouldings etc...
The choice is all yours, clarify by 7:00 am tommorrow morning, bus leaves at that time with the tools.

Change of plans, I'll get the 16 gauge gun. Talking to my dad and he would prefer if that once I get the gun and make sure it works I will send you the money. I PROMISE! PLease include the final cost (and you better not jack up the price rediculously to like $100. LOL)
16 gauge it is.
The price won't be jacked up either.
$45 + shipping, probably $10 or so.

Unless you want the brad nailer, the 5/8's - 2-1/2 offers a nice spread and you'll be wishing for the 2-1/2'''s every so often. The brad gun prob. goes down to 5/8's also and would be a decent all around trim gun-casing/base.
For more meaty fastening-the 16ga.

Cutting the balls off is cheaper. They then piss the same anyway. :-)

extra rail for short cuts would be handy.
The setup I bought came with 2-50" rails, so a smaller one would be nice. Around 40" for cutting down interior doors would be a good size.
I looked at the clamp upgrade system and it looks awesome, the video he had showed him ripping plywood into very thin strips. I'll probably order those soon.

Hey Duane,
Just wanted to say thanks again for dragging that SCMS all the way down here from KY. Had Angel on it yesterday cutting studs, and not one single f'up. He says he really enjoys using it and I suspect I'll do as you suggested at some point and passit on.
Anyway, hope all is well. Have a great '08.

I'm glad you can use it..really. Its a decent saw for the most part, and has been rode hard.
Yeah, pass it on. DDoud sent me a chainsaw when I was in dire need, and Nikkiwood sent a sander he no longer needed, Walter the log lifter etc, etc, etc...so if I can pass it along to you, the gifts keep giving..

Ok here is some guidance on the plane stuff. I noticed you useing a screwdriver on the Lever Cap Screw. Ok, thats a good thing..but when you get the screw at JUST THE RIGHT place to allow the LEVER to firmly LOCK the Iron and chip breaker combo in place, don't mess with the screw any more..it will stay set ( for the most part).
Be certain that the iron is SEATED on the FROG and that the LATERAL adjuster is centered in the slot. And that the iron is not advanced too far, nor retracted too far..via the thumb wheel under the rear tote.
Now, suppose you need to resharpen or adjust the Iron/chipbreaker interface..lift the lever on the lever cap and remove the iron and chip breaker as one..USING the LEVER CAPS THIN NOSE AS A SCREWDRIVER BLADE just loosen the screw holding the Iron enough that the iron can SLIDE away from the chip breaker and then like helicopter rotors twist the two into a CROSS..slide the screw head towards the hole that it passes through and now you can sharpen the iron.
Reassemble the same way pass screw thru the hole, make a cross, close the cross, and CAREFULLY slide the chip breaker to about a 1/16" behing the cutting edge..now, JUST FINGER TIGHTEN the IRON screw, no mechanical advantage at all..finger tite.
By keeping the iron holding screw and lever cap screw IN PLACE THREADED you stand a lesser chance of dropping them in the pile of plane shaveings and losing them. And besides it is quicker to not have to fumble looking for another tool when you just want to adjust or sharpen the plane.
Excellent JOB! I can't do the vids like you did, but If I can walk ya through the sharpening and set up, I will.
Hey? I'll write YOU Produce and be the main star!!!

A frog is the metal block under the iron. It has two screws that allow it to move foreward and backward. By moving it ( the frog) foreward the iron (blade) can be set closer to the MOUTH's ( slot where the cutting edge protrudes out of the SOLE or bottom of the plane) foreward edge.
Another way of terming the mouth is the Throat..shavings pass thru the mouth into the throat..a very closed mouth/throat ( by having the frog set far forward) means the shaveings must be very thin, or you will jam the throat. By haveing the opening very thin, it means that the shaving is SUPPORTED ahead of where it is being cut, and the plane will not allow the grain to tear out as easily as if it was a wide throat..a smoother cut is made.
If you want to really get aggressive and HOG a lot of wood in a hurry, moving the frog BACK and extending the iron farther out ( to take a deeper cut, is called setting the plane RANK) will make the mouth opening wider, and the larger shaveing can pass through easier. But this will be harder to push and leave an unpleasant surface. That can be dealt with by fine planeing with another plane or sanding.
I think I had the frog on both planes set for general best use.
OK, now the CHIP BREAKER is also called a CAP IRON..(I know, a lot of words..) it has that screw we talked about. It BREAKS the curl so that it can exit the plane and also not run ahead and peel out of control before the iron can cleanly slice it. It is VERY important that the cap iron be very tight to the FLAT BACK of the iron, and set fairly close to the actual razor edge. IF it does not fit very precisely, a chip or shaveing can wedge between the two, and give you a major head ache..jamming, chattering, skipping..NO JOY.
I think I had both irons honed very flat on the back side, and also the chip breaker/cap irons fit pretty well for general usage.
I do not think I had DUBBED the irons,,,dubbing is a very slight rounding of the corners so as to not leave tracks from the corners digging in. I do that on some planes that are for smoothing, but for JOINTING an edge, it is not needed. A very slight RADIUS can be ground and then followed by honeing, to the iron, that too will leave a distinct , yet subtle "Hollow" or undulations in the finish planing, this is desireable for say antique reproduction work, where a machined , perfectly flat surface would not be normally found.
By leaving the dubbing to you, you can experiment with how much curvature you may like..it is both a matter of preference and what role the plane is being asked to do.
"Scrubbing" is when the iron is quite heavily curved, it allows a FAST removal of wood, such as removeing sawmill marks, but it leaves pretty serious gouges, so a finely set and less curved plane is used to flatten the high spots and make it less RUSTIC looking..that plane is called a Smoothing plane for that reason..it is also longer, so that it rides over the hollows and makes a flatter surface, without dipping in the scrub planes hollows.
IRONS 101: The Iron is a SOFT steel with a HIGH CARBON edge welded on...it is generally not a good idea to grind any more than you absoluty have to..it will remove the good steel too fast and shorten the life of the iron. And as in ALL sharpening, try to NEVER over heat the steel, dip or QUENCH the iron in water often as you grind.
I never use a fancy way of getting the angle..I eyeball it according to what I am planeing..for soft pine (no big honking knots!) a thinner edge will get sharper, but dull faster. For HARD oak and such, a slightly blunter angle will not get as sharp initially but last longer..shoot for the middle ground, about 25 degrees is a common grind angle, and honeing is a whole nother chapter..but a decent Norton Brand combination stone is a good start..mix cheap motor oil 50/50 with kerosene as a lube and the only thing that will get you good is lots of practice. Always keep the back of both chisels and plane irons PERFECTLY FLAT, NEVER grind or hone the back of the iron except to have it flat and remove that wire edge often called a burr. FLAT,FLAT FLAT.

You will never make it in the Pawn Shop business.
You're supposed to sell used tools for the same price as new.
Hey that's what they do around here.
This week my son asked me to help him ship a 5-6 lb package which was a piece of musical equipment he sold on Ebay. It was a sound effects device for electric guitars.
We packaged it ourselves and went to the UPS Store. The clerk weighed it and said "that will be $17.00" and we paid for it. This was for their standard shipping which is 3 day delivery.
I said I'm just curious, how much would it cost for one day delivery and he said $76
I asked him another question. I said my son is going to be selling stuff like this and shipping it on a regular basis, would it be cheaper for him to go to directly to UPS (rather than UPS store in a strip mall) and he said "no we're the same price".
Again, we packaged this ourselves and took it it. It's much more expensive if you have them package it.
I said "is UPS cheaper than the post office?" and he said "yes, for example on your package, we're charging you $17, the post office would have charged you about $30 for their three day delivery.
He told us a circumstance where UPS is higher than Post Office though.
It's when you are shipping to a PO Box umber. Then you need to ship it through the post office. He said shipping through post office is the cheapest way to go when you ship to a PO address. I said "hey I didn't know that"
I think you're got a great idea trading tools. That's the way they do it at a swap meet where you trade car parts or m/c parts.
When my Dad died I got all his tools. These were common tools such as 3-4 hammers, a lot of screwdrivers, an elect sander, hand saws, hack saws, just the regular stuff. As we speak I probably have over 100 old beat up used screwdrivers.

A pile of reloading equip, scales, press, powder measure, bullets, primers, random casings, misc shotgun stuff in the mix, dies, etc. I used to hunt, shoot, reload all the time. I think the last time I used any of it was about 2000.

Good idea, this thread.
When I buy a new tool it is usually an upgrade and I keep the old tool as a back up. This also means my shop is set up with the inferior, benchwarmers--for the most part.
Tools I am willing to part with are mostly third stringers.
I will give this some thought, as I work in the shop this afternoon.
Your finish guns would be nice for my shop/back up.
What brand and voltage are your cordless tools (I might have some to offer in trade).

The Paslode was barely used and the PC 16 gauge was used more. I really like it, very accurate with the nail lines on the mar free tip. I just use 15, 18, and 23 gauges anymore and it's sitting there wanting a new home. The Paslode was a fill in when I forgot my regular 1-1/2 hour away.

Yes sir I do, if you would like to.
You have your pick, one with a gun hook and one without. They are the gun hooks for Hitachi nailers but I modified the holes to fit the Paslode.
Actually I have a loose hook in the garage would you like that as well? THat would give you the option to mount it yourself.
Either way is fine with me.
I will tell youy this, the Paslodes really require air. I found that running them at 120 psi is best. If not once in a while it will dry fire.

I don't know if anyone is following this long thread, but I will put up that I am looking for a Porter Cable right-hand 7 1/4" saw.
I have an older (second generation?) Paslode coil framer that works great, but we never use it. Shoots real strong and regular.
I may have other tools around if I look. But if anyone has a PC right hander they'd like to part with, email me. If you're interested in the coil framer, email me with an offer.
OH and I've also got about four older drill motors I acquired from a sheetrocker going out of biz, most of them are missing the chuck, but I imagine that can be found after market. They are: Dewalt, Black and Decker (when black and decker made commercial tools) and another brand that I can't remember that specializes in drywall drills. If you want them, let me know and I'll see how much it costs to ship them out to you -- you can have the whole bunch for 10 bucks.
I have a PC blade rigth coming in the mail this week with my EZ rails, I'm probably not going to use it, I'll probably get a base for my 8-1/4" Skil. I haven't used a blade right saw in over 10 years.
Once it shows up here I'll give it a look over and see what shape it in, I'll post a picture and then give you a field report.
Then you can decide, sound okay? Woods favorite carpenter

I'm wanting to get rid of that PC blade right saw.
On the EZ rails it won't cut as deep as I'd like.
I had to pay $80 for it. It runs like new.
Hows $85 shipped sound? Woods favorite carpenter
Fair nuff, where are you shipping it from?
Michigan, I just put a brand new Diablo blade on it, comes with the saw. I made three to four cuts with it and it operated very well.
Email me your mailing address through my profile here. It will be a few days before I can ship them out.

Is that P-C stick nailer a framing gun? Still available for a hundred bangers? Would/does that work with the pancake compressor (which comes w/ the trim gun kit) for small-scale framing jobs?
I'm not sure if it would work with a pancake or not. Depends on how fast you want to shoot them I guess.

Matt,
Got your package today. Read the directions, charged the battery, stuck in an outdated fuel cell and shot up a 2x4 with a clip of 8's. All seems well.
I crated up the mill and stuff, have to wrap in cardboard and tape yet, and get it sent. I will have a very busy next 2 days but should be able to send it by Friday.
Thanks so much.

I've run a framing nailer or two off of a Porter Cable pancake quite a few times. It'll do a reasonably decent job of keeping one gun productive. I wouldn't run every day that way (unless I planned on replacing the compressor fairly soon) but it'll get the job done here and there when need be.View Image
My latest offering. '97 vintage. Never been worked hard or abused. New charger, 2 batteries.
For some reason that I (as well as 2 dirrerent techs) have been unable to acertain, the blade that drives the fastener occasionally fails to retract, making it impossible for the nail strip to advance to the next nail.
It fires like he!!, but no nail.
What value say you???

The way I would look at it is this,
two good batteries, maybe $80 new, $40 used working charger $10 (not sure what those might cost).
The gun needs to be operational for any value in a used state.
Who knows maybe someone might want it. I already traded mine for that chainsaw mill, RIGHT ON MAN! Mine worked great with two newer batteries and a third that could be repaired from a 3rd story fall.
The battery slipped out of my hand in the middle of winter as I was trying to hand it down to be charged.

A coil nailer needs alot of air, because of the large number of nails it holds. With a stick gun the compressor can catch up when you reload. Not going to happen with a coil nailer.
So for the most part you need a big compressor for the coiler. Woods favorite carpenter

What's the model number on the coild framer? I'd like to look it up and see how versitle it is.

http://www.paslode.com/products/tool_catalog/F-325C.html
I didn't know they were such air hogs. That wouldn't work for me. Is it because they shoot nails so fast? If so I'm not that fast so I don't think it will matter. I'm not looking to get production out of it.
"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure." Dan Quayle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x8B6C54ggY&feature=related
I guess what I am trying to say is if you are going to run like a mad man with this gun you need a big compressor to keep up.
If you aren't then it would probably work for most for small projects, but I'd probably go with a stick gun for small jobs. No need for all those nails unless you are runnin and gunnin.
For some reason the model #350 sticks in my mind. It might be a 325. They look identical. I didn't read much of the stats on it. Woods favorite carpenter

Come to think of it, I've got another nice framing nailer I'd like to unload. It's a paper tape Bostitch framing nailer. It's a reconditioned unit that came with a compressor I wanted. I don't used clipped head or papertape collated nailers so it's never been used. It's in perfect factory reconditioned condition. I believe it has the sequential trip trigger currently, but a contact trip trigger can be had for about $20 if you desire. Because it's a reconditioned unit, there are a few minor scuff marks and touchup paint marks on the housing.
I'd sell it for maybe $125 but am more interested in a trade of some sort.

PL should be nothing for Dieselwear. It'll probably dry and fall off in a day or two. I've stopped bullets with mine and usually use it when I need to enter burning buildings as well. Never seems to be any worse for the wear. Just in case, I'll see what I can do about sending a back-up out to you.
Little tip... wear it when you're framing and you won't need a hammer much. I usually just hold the nail close to where I want it and then scare it in the rest of the way with crossed hammer logo.

I am pretty sure it is universal. The are a zillion holes made into the side rails. So I would bet they made it to fit a number of configurations, cheaper than making a million different rails. I had it on a old cast iron craftsman contractors saw. I would bet it would fit. Oh, it is a 52" set.

I have two compressors I need to get rid of,
A baby Senco, good shape used here and there for the last few months. I upgraded to a little bigger unit and this won't be used again.
A pancake Rolair. I'll fetch a link in a minute. Oiled unit, nice shape used off and on for about a year. Rigid Dual tank replaced this one.

FWIW I had a conversation with several Senco people sometime back and they pointed out that according to their specs 1/2" hoses were to be used.(at least on framing guns which is what we were discussing at the time) When I said no one did that they explained that some guns require the volume of air that a 1/2" hose delivers to cycle properly.
Pressure and volume are not the same item. I use 1/4" hose in short lengths at the end of a larger hose, generally 3/8" , but if I am running more than a gun or two out comes my 1/2" for the main supply.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
I rarely use any more than 50' of hose unless roofing. My roofing gun never has a problem.
I'd buy their volume argument in a minute, but I'm loving those easy-to-maneuver small hoses.

I sent out that saw this morning, should be in your by hands by weeks end.
Hope you enjoy it, it needs a new blade. I was shaving off a compound cut on a rafter and the drop got sucked into the saw, I think it bent the blade.
I didn't get a chance to clean it up, it's a little dusty from sitting in garage so long and not being used.
I put a rafter hook on it, its an old gun hook. Spring loaded, kind of nice.

Anyone got a trim saw that uses a 5 3/8" blade with a 10mm arbor? My guess is a cordless trim saw. Anyway... I bought 'em thinking they would fit my Skil 5 1/2" corded trim saw. No-go.

Look at the Makita stick framers. I got one reconditioned recently for about $200 it's a dang good gun. The jury is still out on long term use, but in the first couple weeks I've used it I've been really impressed. The magazine on it blow's Hitachi's out of the water (and we all know I'm a diehard Hitachi fan) and is probably even better than the Supco magazine I upgrade my Hitachis with. For $209 (I think) I can pretty much guarantee you won't find better bang for the buck.View Image
I will look into it. You pretty much have me sold on Hitachis based on your reviews. So if you say the Makita is that impressive then I'll look into it. I'm in the mood to wait until I stumble on a deal anyway.

Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
I didn't think that storm could have any left after it left here.
If thats the case then you can expect 40-50 mph winds following the storm, blowing your freshly plowed piles into drifts.

I just got back in from plowing a second time man.First time around, I was pushing 8" more or less. Wind ran about 20 MPH all day. Then I went out to make some cleanup the drifts runs where necessary just as it was warming up to 34° ( from ten earlier)While I was doing that, it turned to rain and the wind was probably hitting forty.everything will be glass ice and frozen hard come morning.

I have a Bostitch coil framer N80CB. I like it, but it's heavy, especially with a full coil. I don't think it hits very hard, and it's crummy for toe nailing. Think I'd like a stick nailer better. But wadda I know? I've used it a bit, works for me.
Stick nailers do toenail better, but I've yet to find ANY nailer that can beat hand-driven toenails.
I know I'll hear s##t for that comment; just MHO.Live in the solution, not the problem.
Matt,
Talk to me about that coil nailer. Namely, how does it stack up against the N-80's.
Didn't you remark about it being an air hog, or was that something else?Live in the solution, not the problem.
David the N-80s run fine off a big dual tank compressor or comparable compressor. Not so with the Paslodes that I have. Almost need a big gas one to make them sing like a N-80.
They are lighter by a few pounds than the N-80 though and thats why I bought into them. They are great nailers that perform as good as any I have owned.
The new Max I bought smokes both of them. As heavy as the N-80, but drives a nail with monster truck force, doesn't leave any proud in the oldest of timbers or beams. Woods favorite carpenter
FKA- Stilletto
My production days are a decade in the rear-view, so I'm pretty sure the Paslode could keep up with me. I'd really just have it as a backup.
Seems like Gunner's interest is piqued, let's give him 1st shot.
If not, lemme know.
Stay warm.Live in the solution, not the problem.
So do you think the N80's are a little weak? I'm kind of unimpressed with mine, leaves nails proud pretty often. Also double fires if I'm not carefull how I use it.
It does have enough power to blow the side of a 2x4 off and nail a couch inside a living room when I was installing a replacement window. But old hard wood (soft wood) gives it a workout. I usually have to hammer a few in. I don't have enough experience to compare it to other guns. I usually run 120 psi, and that's tops on the hotdog compressor. My old compressor only gets to 100 psi.
I don't think the 80 is weak, I hardly had issues with proud nails with it.
Toe nailing with it can be a pain I agree.
The double firing is a direct result of a heavy gun and a weak spring in the safety nose. I lost one once, that gun shot everyone at least once before I figued out what the issue was. I almost got rid of it because it was a hazard. Only a matter of time before a few flesh wounds turned into something serious.
I switched the spring out for a stronger one and double firing is greatly reduced. I used a bifold door spring, but any of them that are stronger and the same diameter will work.

There are fewer blades than I thought. But there is the saw, a very nice metal case designed for it, a rip guide, all original paperwork, and all original parts such as lube, knobs, inserts, hex keys, etc, 2 unopened 20 tooth carbide blades, 3 new steel fine tooth blades, the original unused steel blade, and a used but still sharp carbide blade in the saw. I just trudged out to the shed and brought it in. Everything is still good. You will be very happy with it. Also it is the quietest saw I have heard. It's a classic.
Sounds good to me Mark, I am working out of town until Tuesday or Wednesday. Then I can get a check headed to you.

I know it's against mancode, but I rarely use it, and I (big breath) have too many tools. Plus, I got a nice used hole hawg last week. That beats a little saw, right?
Man law has loop holes for certain circumstances. This might be one of them.
Replacing a small tool with a larger one might fall into a gray area.

Getting rid of a good tool has to be some kind of violation of man code. Regardless if it is replaced by an entirely different but larger tool.
You know I'll need it as soon as it's gone. But I havent used it in the last 3 or 4 years.
>>But I havent used it in the last 3 or 4 years<<
