Any thoughts on tool/work vests as opposed to more traditional carpenters bags or aprons ? These days it seems you always have a cordless drill on hand, etc. etc. . Occidental makes something called a cordless tool vest. Hmm I wonder??!!

Bump to keep this going. There have been threads in this folder about tool vests, try a search. There are some here that use them regularly.
Here are a couple;

I bought a set a month ago when I hurt my back. They take the weight off your hips, which helps right now but they move everything up above the belt line so if you are used to bags you will be forever reaching down for where your bags used to be. I'm going to give them a couple more months but may return to the conventional bags. Old dog-new tricks.

I use a Skillers vest for anything light / medium duty ( fin carp, service work, elec, hvac, etc). Absolutely love it.
Still use belt for framing , siding, roofing, etc. Don't like the vest for these type of work.

Take a look at the Blaklader vests. I don't have one, but I love their shorts and pants, so if they're half as good as those are, then I think you'll like them.

On the cruise ship that I just got back from remodeling there were alot of people wearing those blaklader pants. Everyone there loved em'.
I just realized today, because I was using them, that good ol' Carhartt bibs can hold a fair amount of stuff.
Amen,
but they need to have 30/36 more readily available.
Actually they ALL need to make em that size.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Dude, I need a 38 for a suit.
I had a wedding to go to and I got a Fiore' Viante' Italian pinstripe 3 pc. the rack pants were 42 waist! to get the jacket that fit my 48" shoulders and 42'' chest.
So the tailor was rubbing his chin and saying " I'ma no sure dat da backa pockets onna deesa pands, aintta gonna hit, whenna I a tuckka them in"
He had to split the seams and remake the pants..
Freak o nature, datsa me.

Damm, 1600 for that rag..I paid less in the 80's and it still fits..LOL need a funeral or wedding to get it out.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

That's a made-to-measure suit, not an off-the-rack rag. You wanted a clothier who would deal with your off-the-chart measurements...? Le voilà .
That price is very reasonable. I have two suits and a tuxedo from Paul Stuart; made for me in 1983 or thereabouts. If memory serves, I paid $1200 for the tux, and about $950 each for the suits.
Considering inflation since 1983, $1600 for that suit today is a bargain. And since you probably wear a suit about as often as I do now, it'll last ya the rest of yer life.

Yeah, I swore off weddings and funerals quite aways back , well, except my own.LOL
And due to good living, court appearances have dwindled too.
But dude, no one can wear a suit from the 80's, the lapels are a dead give away, like shirts with the "Stab me dad" collars..I stil have some of them.
I volunteer a lot for the Salvation Army, and my wife is a big wig there, so she informs me of the bag sale days ( grab all ya want for like 5 bucks a bag full)..and I swear, I wind up with Disco shirts that make ya wanna hurl. Collars that would poke out an eye.
I'm due for a new suit, I think I lost my good one on the last move..and the dogs ate my good shoes, can't recall the last time I needed it, I know I went to court in bibs and wellingtons, but that was because I was hauled in without time to prep.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

WOW...I'm impressed...I think. All the suit talk. Might as well be Chinese to me. No idea at all whatcha all jawin' bout'. Only time I ever owned a suit was when I was 13 for my BarMitvah.....and i think it was iridescent and from Alexanders...a big cheap dept store here in ny in the 60's-70's ish.
Lately I've been feeling dressed up wearing cargo pants to work I got at an Army N Navy store a few weeks ago on St. Marks Place down the Village on sale for $30. I even bought two pairs...shoulda scored three at that price. Lot more comfy then jeans which is what I been wearin' my whole life.
A suit?...where on earth would I ever wear a suit??? Funeral? Who cares...they be dead...they can't see me...lol...wedding? I don't know anyone and my youngest... Jolie wouldn't even want me in a suit...Geezzzz....I'm so confused...lol. Meebe I be missin' sumpin'.
My luck'd have it when I die they lay me out in one....grrrrr.
HAHAHA...lil' funny story. My daughter Jolie who dresses in the same vein as me sorta kinda.....one year for Halloween she came to school dressed totally preppie...you know...white blouse, lime green cardigan sweater draped over her shoulders backwards, pleated skirt...yada yada. The entire school including the teachers were in hysterics. She won the costume party contest. LOLOL
Here's some recent pic she took of herself during a normal day....as you know she's an aspiring photographer at SVA in NYC right now....so you can see why her preppie outfit won the contest.
Wonder where she gets this stuff from ???? lol

HOLY THREAD HIGHJACK BATMAN!Interesting take on fashion, I too could use the 30x36 pants, that's why I'm a huge fan of the tool vests. I've got the Occidental nylon vest and it is great but a little hot in the summer months. You tend to take everything you own with you in all the pockets but you can carry a couple power tools and hang your nailer from it without killing your shoulders at the end of the day.It does feel pretty good to take it off at the end of the day though...
more like 36x30 here
Hijack? Wot hijack? LOL
Oh, I sold my occy vest to Basswood, and have a Duluth Trading vest now, it too is for sale it's too big on me all floppy and stuff, it has the pockets that attach w/ plastic clips and such.
It's a LARGE TALL and I mean it's LARGE and TALL, it hangs in the van mostly holding tools..I THINK I paid 85 bucks, I'll GIVE it to a large guy who wants it, for shipping cost.
I'm not a vest man, I need suspenders and US Army surplus ammo pouches, I build my own tool belts that way.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

That is where yer wrong: The big advantage of buying yer suits from a company like that is that their timeless style grants them a longevity that more than pays for the extra cost. Paul Stuart does not make suits to follow the latest fashion--because fashion changes every twenty minutes. Instead, they have classic style, which never goes out of fashion. I'm too lazy to go put one of mine on and take a pic of me in it, but trust me, bro; I could wear any of those 'old' 1980s duds anywhere without anyone but me knowing how long I've had 'em.
I ain't a clothes horse; when I'm not in my Carhardtts or my ski-patrol uniform, I spend 99% of my time in blue jeans, workboots, and plaid shirts. But when I lived in NYC and ran a graphics studio, I dealt with a lot of big publishing companies and ad agencies, and had to look the part. (I also had a very high-class, uptown GF who liked to go to Broadway openings, the opera, the ballet, and the Rainbow Room. I didn't buy my own tux for nothin'....)

Talkin' daughters? Talkin' Occy?My daughter just took off a couple of months ago for Oxy (Occidental College in Pasadena, that is), and called me the other day from Las Vegas to tell me she was spendin' the weekend there stumpin' for Obama.Let's hear it for daughters!AitchKay
Dang, yer kind of a tall, skinny feller, aren't ya?
I've been 6'4" and 175 wet since I left the Navy in '85..was up to 190 back then, but reverted to slim when I had to start actually feeding myself.
I got a thyroid hypo situ, I do a daily calorie intake that would kill most white men my age. I need 6k, else my body starts eating itself ( muscle) so the daily prescription is a pt of Ben and Jerry Icecream, and 4x a week a pound or more of beef..we just get a half cow cut and wrapped, frozen, and make a lot of pasta.
I really can't afford to feed me, no kiddin.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
