ANDYSZ2 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on October 6, 2003 03:03am

Switched all my tools to the new trailer and tried to reorganize but i need a ladder rack for the trailer and its over 6′ tall so I need a ladder  to get to the top. anybody got any slick ideas for organizing or the ladder rack?

Van equipment makers have ladder racks that rotate down

I know a plumber who just got a set of those new swing down ladder racks. I was very impressed considering what I usually go through getting ladders off of my van. I don't remember the sticker price but I do remember being taken back a bit.CARPEnter DIEM

Electricians here are wearing them on the vans. Their fibreglas laders are heavier than my AL ones. Looks impressive, especialy to my bad back.

I,ve been looking at trailers for awhile now and am continually debate on the right size for my needs. A 6 x 10 seems fine for just tools but too small for tools and materials as well as a bench, etc. The single axle seems a bit light too. A 7 x 14 is much bigger and could be set up closer to a small portable shop as well as carry more materials etc. Tandem axles give more ablity as well. But with a bigger trailer will parking it be worse? Also there,s a big price difference. I don't want to buy a trailer too small, but I don't want one too big either. Any feedback??  Thanks

Tandems are almost a given. Much safer.

Size? Go for what you can afford.

Tandems usually come with brakes and a much higher payload but they can be a pain in the but . My trailer single axle and 6+ tall which is definately a plus I also have a heavy duty dump trailer that I keep scaffolding and use to haul materials.I got a double door in the back which I like better than the ramp type.A negative to a tall trailer is putting a ladder on the roof if I put a rack on it.I have a 28' ladder that I really like for second story houses but I..... hey I just had a bright idea I think I'm going to put a set of folding benches on one exterior side of the trailer and use them  for work bench and platform to load ladders.

    Yup... Cool...

Tires and fenders out side of the trailer body? Side mount.

I'm thinking side mount for the step ladder and I am going to carry my costco fold up in the trailer. Still haven't found a mounting system for trailers the van ones hook on the gutter lip. So has anybody got a good method for mounting on the roof of the trailer ? the roof sides are rounded so it is going to be hard to attach there. I think I might weld a steel  2" square tube underneath the existing rear frame piece and let extend a couple of inches on both sides and weld  a leg to each side and go up from there. this way I am not putting the load on the roof and I can make a ladder to climb up on the rack.

Seen radiused flanfes on the up rights to match the roof profile.

Reinforced interior and thru bolted. Fold up trailer mounted on the tongue a possibility?

            Good mornin' Andy.

Approach it like it was a spare tire. Look see how spare tires are mounted, might stir the imagination.

            Fabrication time.
