Trading Spaces Strikes again

Toolsguy | Posted in General Discussion on May 2, 2004 04:10am

Ok. Had to post this. Just clicked past that horrible show and saw them painting a room OVER wallpaper. The “decorator” claimed they would be saving time by not  taking it down.

Man what a mess.

ha ha            that's nothing. the owner of our only "paint store" makes the same recommendation.  Of course this is a small town in AK.

      Which small town in Alaska?

        Sitka

        1. DavidThomas | May 02, 2004 06:51pm | #13

          "Sitka"

On an island that is off of another island that is off a roundless section of North America.  A place where the road goes connects only two places: 1) the end of the road and 2) the other end of the road.

Only ways out of town are fly, ferry, or swim.

Yep, that counts as small.David Thomas   Overlooking Cook Inlet in Kenai, Alaska

So will that flaming daytime wannabe with facial hair on the Learning Channel.  He was recommending people paint their laminate countertops 'for a new look'.  I got on the website and looked it up, found a forum, and noted my advice against it for numerous reasons.  The people who watch him can't have lives because some told me to mind my own business and that the idiot had saved their lives.  Gentlemen and ladies, we DO have job security as long as he's on the air...

From your neck of the icecubes David I bought some sitka spruce to build my two person kayak many moons ago along with ponderosa pine(in the lower 48.or was it 49?.

Hey, David, Sitka may not have its own Interstate, but it does have its own college.  How many other small towns in Alaska can say that...

Flew into Sitka on what was undoubtedly the last Ford tri-motor in commercial service.  For some strange reason, I felt more secure on that plane than any other that I flew on.  If I remember correctly, the flight approach at the airport leaves somethng to be desired.

Panorama of Sitka (click on the Panaromic View button):

There are webcam views of other small Alaskan towns at:

Yes, it's pretty horrifying.  But the victims sign themselves up for it; as Christine Lavin said, "are you a victim or a volunteer".....

          7. mitch | May 04, 2004 05:22pm | #33

the best comment anyone around here has ever made about the show (which btw- i've never seen) was when somebody actually admitted to applying to have their home redone and featured- but was turned down.  a fellow bt'er- i forget who- suggested they arrange for a drive-by shooting instead.  it would be just as exciting, but cheaper and easier to fix the damage.

Casey, thanks for the Alaskan webcams.  I had a few of those bookmarked (helpful for planning flights) but hardly all of them.

Small Alaskan towns with a college?  Soldotna and Homer, locally.  Several others, too.

I've never been on a Ford Tri-motor but know old-timers up here who have.   My wife caught some rides on a Grumman Goose out of Dilingham.

I occasionally ride a DC-3 from Kenai to Anchorage - but usually a Dash-8.  And you can catch rides on a C-46 Curtiss Commando hauling fuel across the Inlet if just ask to tag along.  Cessna 206 to Homer tonight for an EAA meeting.David Thomas   Overlooking Cook Inlet in Kenai, Alaska

Ya, and how about on other similar shows where they never wash the walls down before they paint?  That drives me nuts and it sends the wrong message.

        1. darcey | May 02, 2004 11:23pm | #19

          Alas, I was rejected... <sniff>

Here is the notice I received:

          Dear Darcy,

Thank you for your interest in our project. We were honored to recieve your application. Your resume and pictures were of special interest to us.

At this this time, however, we regret to inform you, we must reject your application for the following reasons:

          1) We are not looking for people who actually know what they are doing. You are obviously far too experienced for our staff to handle.

          2) We are looking for less mature participants with a far lower intelligence level.

          3) Your upper form is too small. Should you consider having breast implants done, send us some after pictures, and we will study them, to see if you would be suitable for some other position we may have for you.

We will keep your name and the other BTer's on file just in case we ever get smart enough to actually produce a REAL reality program about remodeling.

          Signed,

          The Casting Guy

    Hey Tools',

Last night I watched one of 'em paint over a dang piano! No sanding, no cleaning, just got a roller and white latex and rolled over a nice walnut or mahogany piano!... she made the comment, I don't know what kind of wood this is... Paige said "I'm not having anything to do with this and bolted! ...latex over unsanded, uncleaned, finished walnut. Nice...

    Bill

    1. Toolsguy | May 03, 2004 02:21am | #20

SLOFUT, yeah, same show. I was watching it at the same time you were and had to come post after I saw them paint the paper. Went back and saw them painting that piano. HACKS

      1. IanDG | May 03, 2004 02:28am | #21

Standard procedure for dealing with an old plastered wall that has a lot of small surface cracks is to paper with lining paper, then paint.

There are also many textured plain papers that are specifically made to be painted after hanging.

I think I saw the preview for that show when the homeowner stood in front of a nice upright piano and said 'THIS IS OFF LIMITS'.

Everything looks OK on TV. I'll bet it all looks like crap in person.

Personally I wouldnt let those people in my house...well, maybe Paige Davis could stay...

My mom told me once that she saw a Trading Spaces show where they glued three dimensional paper flowers to the walls in -- aargh -- a bathroom.  The show should be called "Making Messes".

the one episode I have seen had people glueing straw to the walls of the living room....

The first thing the designers do to a couple's bedroom is remove their ceiling fan, replacing it with a hanging light made from aluminum pie pans and silk scarves. The second thing out of the couple's mouths when they open their eyes (after "Oh, my God") is, "Who took our ceiling fan?" I've always wanted to see the results a month or so later, after the seams have split on the sheeting slip covers, the legs have collapsed on the day beds, and the walls have been repainted.

        2. Tomar | May 03, 2004 10:28pm | #27

Did anyone see the one where they covered the whole kitchen wall with wine labels, even tho they knew the homeowners were openly against alcohol.

  7. Tomar | May 02, 2004 04:56pm | #11

I saw one the other day where they were painting over a block and stucco wall with what looked like a 3/8" nap roller, and commented on how unfortunate it was that it was taking so long.
