I am in the process of framing a small pump house for these two older ladies and have run into a problem that I never thought of before, They want to build a canning kitchen on top of the works and have access through a trap door in the floor of the kitchen with stairs that go down. thats not the problem as that is *ignore* easy to frame the problem is how do I make a sturdy trapdoor that an older woman can lift, is there some kind of mechanism that anyone knows of that can help lift that door, maybe like those shocks on my minivan that help me open the hatch door or something. Check out one of those roof hatch companies. They just might have what you're looking for made up, or at least the hardware and a look at it's operation that you could canabalize. Your talking a fairly good sized opening right? If the hinge or head side was next to a wall, you could do some inovative pulley work. Caution yourself to the safety as you wouldn't want her to get bonked. Watch some of those old horror flicks for some ideas. Best of luck.
