this job is an existing deck, built about ’85…. the deck is too small…the decking is SYP PT… with lots of splits & checks
also… we wanted to tie in the back door so it could access the deck
here’s the existing…. hard to see with all the overgrown shrubbery
here’s the other door we want to tie in… looks like a little jack-hammer work so we can frame over it
so the constraints are the existing walk (bluestone set in concrete ) and the existing septic tank about 7′ away from the bay window

here's the main beam that supports about 4' of cantilever

we decided to extend the frame out to the walk and cut the main steps back into the deck.....
View Image
also.... the deck is only 17" above grade... so we will use a lot of the deck area as one big seat
here's the framing extended past the bay windo to connect to the other door

how do you like the artisan rail? I did one recently and thought it was a well engineered system with the only exception being that assembling the stair runs were not easy. Too steep it seemed. balastures were always fighting me trying to slide the cover pieces into place."it aint the work I mind,
It's the feeling of falling further behind."Bozini Latinihttp://www.ingrainedwoodworking.com
we've done a couple of rail systems... and so far this Artisan is about the best
i didn't have any trouble with the stair rails...
Roy did all the rails.... he liked themMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Lookin' good, Mike!!
What did you do about the septic access?

I misunderstood, I thought the deck was covering, cool deck!!
That smiling barbeque is quite the ham, isn't it ?;o)
Great looking job Mike. Makes me wish I had the selling ability to push more of the composite jobs. SYP looks great for what... 2 days? If the sun don't shine on it too hot! <g>
The best reward for a job well done is the opportunity to do another.
went back this morning to touch up the paint around the old dryer vent we removed.... and glue on the last of the post caps
the owner was airing her grandmother's wedding dress to show to her future daughter-in-law ... quite the dress !

this was a little tricky because we wanted the rail to turn and go down the stairs... fairly easy when the stairs start at the rail line... but in this case the stairs are cut into the deck, because of the constraint of the existing bluestone walk...
note that we also used a Trex 1x12 fascia

I've been trying to do as little as possible. Don't want to resign, though, because once I'm out I'm out. A lot of new bodies have been coming through the system though, so they've needed me to get new guys checked out into some of the trickier places we go.All's well, though...

At times it's unreal!
Mike,
Ain't you missing some railing??
I know...I know its prolly what the client wanted, but to my eye, it looks 1/2 done.
http://www.grosshillrentals.com
1/2 done is better than not done
we left the railing off on those sections because the deck is only 17" above grade there... so the whole deck edge becomes a seat and the deck extends into the future patio areMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

Mike,Thanks for again taking the time to post one of your projects.A question on how you do the Trex fascia. Do you butt the corners or miter them?On the decking where you mitered the corners. Do the miters stay fairly tight with the extremes of heat & cold?
on the fascia, we butt the corners... Trex moves too much for me to consider mitering themMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
