Need some advice from trim carpenters and/or painters.
I am building yet another house for myself….this one a retirement home. In other houses I used the following sequence for trim around windows, doors, and for baseboards.
– put on the trim
– set the nails
– light sanding
– used white latex chaulking for any spaces between the trim and the drywall
– used white latex chaulking for any imperfections in the corners
– wiped with wet cloth to smooth out the chaulking
– applied the base coat of paint
– used various fillers for the nail holes….waterbased filler, oilbased putty, all purpose drywall guck, etc.
– light sanding
– finish coats of paint
Seems all kinds of things used for filler in trim….would like some more options and opinions as some of you gentlemen(women) do this everyday and have it down to a fine art.

-pre-prime trim[if needed]
-****paint the outside edge of trim first with finish color[that's if your trim color is different than wall color]. This eliminates cutting in trim.
-install trim
-nail
-fill holes
-lite sand
-caulk were needed--smooth caulk with finger and clean finger w/rag [wet cloth??]
-allow dry time for caulking
-first coat
-lite sanding[optional]
-final coat
I usually don't sand in between coats... I should try it some time. A good quality brush usually does the trick.
Hope that helps.

*Good sequence from Mike. For filling gaps and holes in the wood, I overfill with either vinyl spackling or preferably good old Synko, then sand. I don't like to use 'lightweight', and with latex caulk you can't sand it. JMHO -Ken
