Whenever I latex-paint over spackling, I find that the paint brush picks up some spackling and leaves the beautiful smooth spackle surface pockmarked. I tried a new container of vinyl spackle. I tried letting the spackle dry 24 hours before painting. I tried using Kilz primer before painting. Even the primer seems to soften and lift some of the spackle.
I haven’t tried using a roller.
Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?
What do you suggest?
Thank you for your help.

It sounds to me like the pits are already in the surface but are not visible because they are filled in with sanding dust. If you vacuum the surface before painting you may see the pits. The solution is to vacuum then apply another coat of compound to fill the pits and sand again. Then wipe the surface clean of dust with a damp sponge or damp rag. Don't rub so hard you texture the surface.
