For reasons unknown, NY State has always been very reasonable on DMV registration fees, $21/yr for my Toyota shortbed, commercial plates. $12/yr for my trailer. Motorcyles are about the same.
Makes up a little for the terrible property taxes and limited services.
Edit: But I'd rather have your PA auto insurance rates.

My pickup is $52 here in Or.
My 1 tons (Flat Bed and Box Van) were rated commercial and had to have commercial plates and registration , near $170.00.
The deal with the 1 tons has been a back and forth issue in recent years here.
Maybe 5 years ago they changed and the 1 tons had to be commercial , then last year they went back and allowed registration as personal again. Break point is at 10,000lbs GVW
Washington state 1/2 ton 4X $35.00 (plus $40.00 for theme plates I ordered)

I forgot what it is in Mo and a couple of years ago they went with 2 year option. But IIRC it is in the $25-35 range for my ranger. When I got it it was the first truck that I had and I was surprised that the plates where different.Plates are rated on total weight of the truck and any trailer that it might pull.I got 6,000 lb plates which cost the same at auto plates. The next level is 12,000 lbs. They only pickups that I see with larger than 6,000 tags are 1 ton that I see with trailers with tractors/backhoes and the like.I asked about vans and they told me that if they came with seats then they are cars, if not then they are trucks.I see a lot of vans with tools and supplies with passenger plates..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
California registered 1986 Chev. 3/4 ton PU, $133.00
1995 Dodge 3/4 ton diesel $ 266.00 which includes about $30.00 for a personalized plate.
BTW, this is after CUTTING the registration fees......
Does that include and "property taxes?"I know that CA used to include a fee based on value that could be deducted on income tax returns as property taxes. But that was only part of the registration fee..

first van I had (3/4 ton) was a former pass van ... windows all the way around ...
so it had car tags ... qualified as a station wagon.
next, was a one ton cargo van. Came from factory with no side/ rear windows, first owner cut one in one side door and one in one rear door.
second owner, guy I bought it from, fought to have it registered as a station wagon and get the cheaper tags.
He went so far as requestion some special DMV hearing and brought pics and specs from their own paperwork ... guess he really wanted those cheaper tags ... said it took over a year.
wehn we went to the notary to sign over the paperwork ... he badgered her into submission ... we were there for over an hour to do simple paperwork ... he had her on the phone to Harrisburg ... was yelling at everyone.
Which was good for me ... I got cheaper tags.
Can't complain now ... had about 15 yrs of lower priced vans.

In Michigan cars & personal trucks based on value. Commercial plates based on wt + value (I think). Never bothered with commercial myself as I have never seen it enforced.
2007 silverado about 190.00
Trailers are reasonable though, state switched to non expiring a couple years ago,
most cost 78.00 for life, before that many contractors lettered teir trailers as "tool
crib" and usually could then get away without plates as the state then just
considered them "equipment" not vehicles
Here's what I'll have to pay for my truck in Indiana in a couple of weeks:
2005 Chevy Colorado = 7,000 GVWR Truck Plate
State Plate Fee = 29.75, Excise Tax = 139.00 for a Total of $168.75
Specialty plates add between $15 and $40.

For my 2007 F150 4x4, this past December I paid $489.64 (for one year.) After reading the range of license fees you guys pay, I had to go back to last year's check register to make sure that I did not mis-remember. I didn't.
I guess Fremont County, Wyoming's high fee compensates for no state or local income tax, and a 5% sales tax. Still, nearly five bills seems a trifling high. I think I'll go out and drive up and down every road I can find.
in PA I'm pretty sure we get to pay some of the highest state taxes ...

Toyota Tundra.
About $55 for tags on a 1993 Suburban, but personal property tax was about $120, as I recall.
City sticker was $20.
