Whaddya think? Will world production of plywood and lumber be strapped by the need to rebuild? They are talking about rebuilding taking decades.
If we thought plywood and OSB was high before, what will happen now?

bamboo..?
Keep in mind that a lot of veneer woods come from that part of the world. Likely to see a shortage of those for 6-12 months.
I doubt it. The type of construction along the coast there doesn't involve a lot of plywood. Most of ours comes from the US and Canada, and is probably too pricey to ship to that part of the world. Some will probably go as part of relief efforts, but probably a very small amount compared to the North American market.
They have really abundant forests there, so lumber will all be local.

I think rebuilding in the same manner/ location is just silly..it will happen again. There has to be 'safer' places to relocte the victims to.

I think there is a natural disaster custom designed for where ever you live. jt8

I think the victims were mostly relocated to the ocean or in mass graves.

I see your point - I was making a macabre joke. Laugh already!
Edited to add: perhaps you have room for the several million survivors that need a new home in Kentucky?

unfortunately I think lumber prices will go up.
the lumber companies are thieves, just like the oil companies
oh a disaster, lets raise prices temporarily
but they never go all the way back down
if we make it through 2005 without a natural disaster, then we will have to send plywood to the space station for repairs and prices will "sky-rocket".
so now what, I contact clients and say , lumber prices are up becasue of the tsunami
they didnt buy it when prices went up for rebuilding Iraq.
I don't think there will be any actual shortages as most of the facilities were located farther inland, but it sure is a great opportunity to jack-up prices!
My local Home Depot has apready raised the price of drywall and plywood.
No reason given, but the price spikes are high (in my opinion)
