ALl,
Removed tub coverplate, found no cotter pin at end of trip lever, saw rod, linkage, etc., in drain tube but could not recover it. Tried using a wire to pull top portion of assembly up but to no avail. Something is either stuck or broken. Tub drains properly and customer is currently using a rubber stopper but would prefer to have drain assembly fixed. This is a plunger-type tub drain.
My question: Is there a way to fix the drain assembly w/o having to remove it by accessing it thru the floor?
Thanks,
dlb

First floor, second floor, crawl space, basement ? What is underneath and/or behind the tub/shower?
If you can get to the bottom or back of the drain/overflow assembly it would be easier to just take the whole thing out. Cutting and patching a little drywall is just a part of the job sometimes.

The area below the bathroom is very open and I would have to remove some plywood to access the drain. It appears that I do not have much choice other that attacking this problem from the bottom. If so, does that mean that I am a proctologist? The Undisciplined Life Is Not Worth Examining.
another approach would be to change the stopper to a push pop type ( a spring loaded stopper where you push it in to seal the drain and push it again to open the drain ) these stoppers come with a blank for the tub overfill pipe.
I think you still would have to retrieve the stopper though, I would worry about it sealing the drain in the future. It is very strange that the cylinder is absent but the drain drains, are you sure it is in there?

As far as I can discern all of the pieces and parts are there. I like your idea & will look into it. Thanks. The Undisciplined Life Is Not Worth Examining.
