I went to Sams Club yesterday evening and I talked to the young lady at the check out stand.
I commented how busy they are whenever I go there which is about once a month.
She said “do you see the four people running the cash registers?” and I said yes.
She said all of us are new and none of us were trained to run the cash register.
She said we had an emergency situation today and got placed at the cash registers.
I said “what happened” and she said “five people didn’t show up for work” and I said “will they get fired?” and she said yes but some of them called in and said “I’m not coming to work today and I’m not coming to work there anymore – I quit”
I was thinking about this and I think it’s very common and the turnover is really high at the places I go to on a regular basis.

thats whats wrong with our country and economy these days, those jobs don't pay decent living wages, its only temporary until you can do better.
a sign of the times i am afraid.
I wonder what that's like to be the manager and see a large number of people who just don't show up or they call and quit without giving any noticeI think it would be a lot of stress. And I agree I'm sure the people quit because it's not a high paying job and they can go find another similar job tomorrowSeems like they are burning their bridges when they quit this way..+++Spring Break = Summer Broke
In the 60's and early 70's the area I lived in was an oil boom area and had manufacturing jobs in abundance around the area. It was common to see people (young) get mad and quit a job, hang out till the money was gone, then go get a similar job elsewhere. These jobs paid well for the era.
I hear how our work ethic has changed but I am not so sure. Good workers usually hang out with other good workers and fail to realize that there have always been a fair number of poor quality workers in every generation.
For instance when we hear about drug abuse in the work place and act like it is a generational issue. In the early 1900's Henry Fords biggest challenge was to keep the work force sober during work. They even had to put people in the can so people wouldn't sneak in a quick drink there. Just people being people over and over again. DanT

I got an email from the Working Persons Store with father's day specials yesterday.
They had a devoted section for flasks! Mike
Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
What's a "living wage?" Around here Walmarts, Sams, Costco, and BJ's are some of the better places to work if you don't have experience. If you stick with it and are on the ball you could eventually be made a store manager and make $100K annually plus great benefits. Generally speaking large chain stores pay better wages and have much better benefits than local stores. The problem is they hire people with no work ethic who have to work nights and weekends. They don't want to work Saturday night while their friends party so they quit. I'm afraid it is a sign of the times.

That's the opposite of what DW told me a week ago. She got to talking with an employee at Costco, and they said no one ever leaves because the benes are good and the pay is decent. Maybe none of the older ones leave.

Sams club (Walmart) and Costco are on the opposite ends of the employee philosphy chart. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Wallmart distrubution center here is always hiring, paying well above average. A friend tried it. Left before it killed him. Now he's doing similar work for Target. Not happy, but coping.
PAHS works. Bury it.
Is that the distribution center at Zion Crossroads? How is that Lowes coming along?"Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Yup, Zion crossroads. Don't know anything about Lowe's there. I go through twice a year. The Lowe's in N. C'vlle is under-stocked, crowded. Waynesboro is a better bet for me, both big boxes in close proximity.
Speaking of similar, do you know Beckstoffers in Richmond (assuming it's still around)? Old-time millworks that I'd be surprised if they didn't have any knife you needed. Surprisingly inexpensive and easily came up with anything I asked for, custom columns (to match) included.
Was 804, 644-4081. Appeared they never had any turnover. Very competent.

We looked at putting a branch in the new shopping cenmter at that intersection. Same side of the street as the Walmart distribution center. Big Super Walmart, Lowes, and a bunch of other stores. Whe we looked at it in Feb-Mar thay were starting the walls for Lowes, everything else was just stakes in the ground. The developer was real prouid of his dirt, too, so we backed out."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

I think when the working conditions are shiddy people will leave, working conditions good - people will stay. Sorta like what Jim said in his post.
Walmart/Sams Club has never injoyed a good reputation for as a place to work but Costco has - thats the difference there.
