I have to install a railing on a stairway. The railing is 2 inchs wide and 6 high with a rise of 7.5 and a run of 9.5 inches. The problem is making a 45 degree turn to the right then to the left keeping the same slope with all surfaces lining up and keeping the same plane. How do you do this and what is the formula. Please help I’m running out of scrap and hair.

Stubby, first you come here with a haunted door, and now you've got a fun house stair. What'sup dude?
There is no formula, get more scraps and dimoxidil.
The pieces running at 45 will need to be wider than the common runs.
Better check the code to see if a 2" wide handrail will pass. It's 1 5/8" wide here.
*I'm just the guy who gets stuck doing the stuff that the boss and the rest of the crew can't. What is dimoxidil?
*'s Homer Simpsons's hair restorer. Doh!
*I'd love to tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.Pete Draganic
*You need posts at the turns, or risers.Blue
*Hi Stubby. If I understand you correctly, what you need is a small ramp, same slope as stairs, so that the railing wood rests on an angle as you push through the band saw.Hope this helps.
*Stubby, sorry, I don't know what I was thinking (or wasn't thinking). Dimoxidil OD, I guess. Blue's right on. Drops or risers, and/or newels. If it's on the open side of the steps, I'll tack, or clamp, some verticle 1x4 to the zigzaggy( that's for you Andrew d) part of the stair carriage and spring clamp a 1x4 temporary handrail to them at the appropriate height. You can figure all your handrail intersections, cuts, newels and heights if you need them, from your temporary. If it's on the closed side of the stairs, you don't need the verticals, Lightly pencil (the painter will be much happier than if you use chalk) lines on the wall. You should still have some hair left by the time you're done.
