Turret Roof Copper Roof Shingles

Framer | Posted in Construction Techniques on April 1, 2003 02:23am

This is a Turret roof that I framed and the homeowner wanted Copper shingles wavy like the hand split cedar roof.

Piffin, this is the roof that I was telling you about.

I remember the thread. thankls for coming back with these.

This roof is a gem of a keeper! The guy did fantastic work. Wish my name were on it.

BTW, I see in #7 that Joe hasn't got that gothic door installed yet!

    ;)

      Piffin,

This was the first time I've ever seen a roof done that way. Have you or anyone else seen it done that way befor?

Where still waiting for the Dragon to come in for the peak. That should be interesting.

Your right, Joe Fusco hasn't got the door in yet. He's still trying to figure out how to do it. He told me today that he was going threw all his video tapes of This Old House from the very first episode from when Steve took over because Steve is Joe's Idol. ;-)

Here's a couple more shots from the bedroom and the back of the house you can see the roof sticking above the main roof.

        The WHOLE roof is copper?

I thought it was just the turret, didnt look close enough at the other pics I guess.  Geez thats got to be a truck load of money.  Certianly isnt your typical mc mansionView ImageGo Jayhawks

        1. Framer | Apr 01, 2003 08:09am | #8

          Cag,

The whole roof isn't copper, just the Turret, the three bays and the box window is copper. The rest of the house is hand split cedar.

To do the whole house in copper would probably cost about 2 grand. ;-)

Guess I don't know much about roofs, hel! I know I don't I figured it would be more equivalent to slate or spanish tileView ImageGo Jayhawks

            Cag,

            I'm just busting your chops.

The whole roof was 96 squares not including the Turret. I'll have to ask the roofer what he got to do the Turret.

I can only imaging how much it would cost to do the whole roof.

Just think, he cut, bent and interlocked every shingle, all 4 sides and made his own nailing clips out of copper. Then he used a rubber mallet to shape it in.

            96 squares 'MING"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            Holy freakin' A.

            wow

            man...

            I, uh,

            wow, what a roof

thank you for sharing those pictures. Someone built a masterpiece of a turret roof is all I can say!

or, as Apu (Simpson's) would say: Shiva H. Vishnu!

            Norm,

It's definitely something  that I had to see it to believe it. There's alot of different things going on in this house.

The homeowner has beams from a 100 year old barn that she had cut, arched, stained and there all hanging down from the new kitchen ceiling around the fireplace, the future island. I'll take pictures of those.

            Joe,

I thought you maybe left a zero or two off the calculations.  Or you just lost your mind. :)

I could build my house again for what that roof is costing. Then I'd have two grand houses.

            ;).

    Joe,

Once again, nice work.  That roofer did a great job!  I didn't imagine it looking that good.  I would take some pics and keep that in a porfolio.

It looks like the roof in the entry is slightly curved.  Is it?  I like the look of that house a lot.

    1. Framer | Apr 01, 2003 08:06am | #7

      Tim,

At first when we were discussing the roof being done that way, I didn't think that it would look that good either but as he kept going and the homeowner said to him to keep the copper wavy like the hand split cedar roof it just kept looking better and better as he moved up the roof.

The back entry roof is curved. That's where Joe Fusco is building the Gothic Door that I think that you, Piffin and myself should go to his shop and show him what the hell to do because I don't think he's going to find out by watching all the This Old House tapes that he has of Steve Thomas, Joe's Idol. ;-)

Very good looking house I think the turret looks great in copper.

The owner must have a boat load of $$

I think the purpose of that white PU out front was to carry some of that $$$ away from there to find true happiness in a more humble abode.

      LOL.
