Just got these pictures taken the other day. This is one of the wierdest buildings I’ve ever done roof trusses for. On the end closest in picture #1, the building is 12′ wide and the roof is symmetrical at 16/12.
The building is tapered – It’s 40′ wide at the other end. As the building gets wider, the peak stays at the same elevation. The roof pitch gradually changes to about 3/12. This means the roof isn’t a flat plane, but “twists” as the width of the building changes. That meant every last roof truss was different. The trusses cost a fortune.
Only an Architect could dream up something like that…………(-:
We’re good together.
But I like it better when we’re bad together.

Wow Boss, that is EXACTLY what I had drawn for the DW to OK for my new shop..too, funny. It has a birds wing look..exactly. I had not thought of trusses..got details? WEIRD.

Details? Like what ???
You mean you actually WANT something like this ?
I thought it was nuts. Wasted a tremendous amount of materials and laboe trying to put it together. Took a heck of a lot of my design time to do the dumb thing too. With every single truss being different, every one had to be hand calced and run individually. The computer was no help in that situation. The program only figures out trusses in flat planes.Newspaper ad: "Home wanted for friendly Labrador. Will eat anything -- loves children"
yeah, details. Did the 16/12 morph into the 3/12 smoothly, was it a fink truss? I can envision a scissor truss like that..
actually I wanted a curved top chord, like a pagoda..I guess I will saw the tops (or rafters) out of solid stock. I am not going the same width wise..wider than 12 to narrower than what was there..not set in stone yet. Just caught me as funny that someone else did it, sorry you seem to hate it.
Being one offs and each different I bet the cost was outrageous.

Sphere,
The ridgeline and lower corners on my house swoop up, pagoda like. When it had cedar shakes the look was even more pronounced. It looks to me (when the shakes were pulled off) like rafters were done normally, and then they built the structure on top of that to create the rooflines.
It's a pretty cool look.
gee, I take a day off an spend it yakkin with you..<G>..
I think that look is way cool..not yer ordinary run of the mill roof..being extremly eclectic in my tastes..some folks have to stand back and let it sink in..all these tobacco barns here are drab..so I want to have my shop be the showcase for what goes on inside..like the house ain't enough.!!
go get that dog now..no cheap wally world chow either..and a few chewies and treats..stay away from reconstituted raw hide chewies..BAD GAS.

" Did the 16/12 morph into the 3/12 smoothly, was it a fink truss?"
I think you've got the concept of this building wrong. The roof doesn't CURVE, it TWISTS. As the building gets wider, each truss gets longer. The peak and the fascia line stay at the same elevation. The top chords of each truss are straight, they just change pitches each time.
Don't know what exactly you're calling a "fink" truss. Each truss was webbed as needed for the particular span of the truss.
Each truss had a flat bottom chord - There were no scissors.Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggy" until you can find a rock.
gotcha..I call a 'W' type standard truss a fink truss. I understand the rige and fascia details..and the flat top chord.
Believe it or not I want to do mine in a metal skin, and it will be a scissor design..but fewer trusses over all, more like timberframe with 4' centers.
differnt stokes for differnt folks..

Typical computer program. Automates the routine stuff, then wimps out when it gets to a job that could use some serious silicon brain sweat.

Yup - That about sums it up.Progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things.
yeah, but you the man for figuring it out minus the pc...
anyway, they could have saved money if they just stick built it ;)
Smart a$$.
Actually, I wonder how many stick framers COULD cut that roof. Probably not a lot. Just like there aren't a lot of truss designers who could figure the trusses out.
Actually, the stick framers would have an advantage. If they cut something wrong, they just toss the board aside and grab another one. I have to figure everything out ahead of time.
I only have one chance to get it right the first time.Humpty Dumpty was pushed.
But if they start at the big end, any mistakes could be used for the next shorter rafter.

"But if they start at the big end, any mistakes could be used for the next shorter rafter. "
That was kinda my point. They can keep cutting rafters until they get one that fits.
You can do that with trusses, but it's awfully expensive. Framers seem to think we're idiots if the trusses don't fit just right the first time. But they think nothing of cutting a rafter 2 or 3 times if they make a mistake.
Not trying to slam framers. It's just the way things work.“ . . . the manager who lets employees dictate their job functions is a manager who will soon be looking for another job." [Martin Yate, Hiring the Best]
All those damn plates make it difficult to cut trusses.

I'll bet you were smirking the whole time you posted that weren't you ???

What I was thinking earlier was after the framers get their rafters short enuff & ruined enuff they could use them to make trusses.
